Déjà vu at Red Wilson Field, Braves again tie Y-D 4-4 on the road

SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. — It was one swing that gave Bourne the lead, but the bullpen gave it up late, then the same person that gave the Braves the lead tied it upp.

Drew Wyers (Mississippi State) had his first game Thursday against the Brewster Whitecaps, where he went 3-for-5 in the win, and a pair of swings from his bat were the reason Bourne stayed in the game against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

It was déjà vu at Red Wilson Field, as just like the first week of the season when the Braves hit the road in South Yarmouth, they tied Y-D 4-4.

The Red Sox got in front early in the second inning, starting with a Connor Capece (Creighton) double. He then reached third following a ball hit in play by Brayden Dowd (USC) that resulted in a fielding error by Camden Kozeal (Arkansas) at second base.

Shortly after, Y-D went up, 1-0, as Capece cashed in on an RBI single by Dean Carpentier (USC).

The Braves then took their lead in the fourth, as Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt) and Kade Lewis (Wake Forest) took consecutive free passes to give Wyers an opportunity at the plate. He took that opportunity, burying a 385-foot shot over the left field fence at an exit velocity of 100 mph to have Bourne in front, 3-1.

A half-inning later, the Red Sox cut their deficit to a run, starting with a single from Yomar Carreras (Rutgers). He advanced to second after a groundout hit by Armando Briseno (Long Beach State). After a wild pitch from Matthew Shorey (Vanderbilt), Carreras touched home plate to make it a 3-2 game following an RBI single from Chris Hacopian (Texas A&M).

The Braves had an opportunity in the fifth after loading the bases via a pair of walks from Holcomb and Lewis as well as Kozeal getting hit by a pitch. They weren't able to tally anything, as Cal Sefick (Cincinnati) struck out to end the frame.

Y-D had a runner in scoring position itself in the seventh, as Briseno reached second on a double, but the Red Sox's bats couldn't get him home.

Then the Red Sox cashed in, as a solo shot from Costello cleared the fence off Packy Bradley-Cooney (Alabama) to knot the game up at 3-3 — they didn't stop there. After a walk from Carpentier, a double from A.J. Nessler had Carpentier touch home to give Y-D its first lead of the evening, 4-3.

It was a timely moment to take the lead, but then the Braves tied it right back, as Wyers drilled his second home run of the contest on a 412-foot bomb with an exit velocity of 101 miles-per-hour to knot it up at 4-4.

After giving up two runs in the eighth, Bradley-Cooney bounced back in the ninth and allowed zero runs, having the game end in a 4-4 tie due to darkness.

Bourne Braves Player of the Game

Wyers was the lone source of offensive production, as he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and all four RBIs.

Key moment

The home run in the top of the ninth inning off the bat of Wyers was the difference between the Braves escaping with a tie and not a second straight loss.

Up next

Bourne (13-14-2, 28 points) will head home to Doran Park to face off against the Harwich Mariners (14-12-3, 31 points). The last time the two teams met, Harwich emerged victorious, 3-1.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
