HYANNIS, Mass. — Wareham Gatemen first baseman Caden McDonald and Chatham Anglers right-handed pitcher Duke Stone have been named the Franklin Sports Player of the Week and Cape League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 12-July 18, the league announced Sunday.
McDonald, a 20-year-old first baseman from Florida, recorded a hit in every game he played in this week. He was tied for the league lead in home runs (2), RBI (7), and runs scored (7), and McDonald slashed .412/.474/.765/1.239 over the week.
On top of the hitting stats, McDonald pitched five no-hit innings against the Brewster Whitecaps on July 15, allowing just one earned run, walking two, and striking out six. McDonald and the Gatemen travel to Yarmouth-Dennis to take on the Red Sox, Monday at 5:00 p.m.
Stone, a 19-year-old righty from Mississippi State, was phenomenal this week, pitching 11 innings without allowing a run. He picked up two wins and struck out 13 over both outings. He held Y-D to one hit in five innings and followed that up with six shutout innings against Brewster.
Stone’s 0.62 WHIP and his 11.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio both now lead the Cape League. His .148 batting average is good for second. Stone and the Anglers head to Cotuit to play the Kettleers, Monday at 5:00 p.m.
