Bourne loses 12-9 to Orleans despite early offensive production

BOURNE, Mass. — Entering the Monday night matchup, Orleans pitcher Isaiah Magadelo (Hawaii) had posted a .82 ERA through the 11 innings he tossed in five games.

That ERA resulted in just one run given up — the Braves got to him early and added seven runs in the second inning to his season total.

Just like on Friday in the win over Wareham where Bourne posted eight runs in the first, it was the early run production that gave the Braves the lead, but this time they gave it up, losing 12-9 to the Firebirds.

The huge second started with Cam Kozeal reaching on a fielding error by Kai Wagner (Northern Colorado) and getting to third on a single from Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt). Kozeal then cashed in on an infield single from Logan Hughes (Texas Tech), and after a groundout from Mark Quatrani (Notre Dame) that advanced the pair and a Ryan Cooney (Oregon) walk, both Holcomb and Hughes scored on a two-run single from Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt).

Waite reached second on a fielding error from Anthony Potestio (UC San Diego) in right field, advancing Cooney, who scored shortly after an RBI single from Jon LeGrande (St. John’s). Cal Sefcik (Cincinnati) then scored Waite on a one-base knock, and after a double steal from LeGrande and Sefcik, LeGrande scored on a RBI single from Kade Lewis (Wake Forest).

The scoring spree ended after an RBI force out hit by Kozeal, with the inning finishing with the Braves in front 7-0.

Despite the monster inning from Bourne, Orleans cut the deficit in the ensuing frame, starting with Elijah Ickes (Hawaii) sending a double, then getting to third on a groundout hit by Robbie Lavey (George Washington). An RBI single from Ryan Kucherak (Northwestern) knocked Lavey in — he found himself on second after a single from Dawson Bryce (Charlotte).

Wagner reached on a throwing error from Waite that sailed past Holcomb at third, which in turn scored Kucherak. A two-run single would follow from Javar Williams (Wake Forest), and after a Potestio walk, an RBI single from Alejandro Garza (Cal Poly) had the scoreboard read 7-5 after the inning.

The Firebirds came right back in the sixth and tied it up at 7-7, starting with a double from Wagner. After a groundout from Williams and a walk from Potestio, Orleans had runners on the corners.

Wagner then scored on a passed ball, and Potestio touched home plate seconds later after an RBI single from Garza to knot the game up.

Orleans then took its first lead of the game in the seventh, as Ickes found himself on third after a single and another one-base knock from Lavey. Ickes then scored on an RBI fielder's choice after an unsuccessful throw from Joey Colucci (Virginia) at the plate to nab Ickes.

Lavey then got to third after a sacrifice bunt from Cashel Dugger (UCLA), scoring shortly after on a single from Bryce. Bryce stole second, so Kucherak was able to steal home as the throw from Quatrani to second gave him enough time to touch home plate.

Bryce stole second, then Williams was hit by a pitch — the pair would both be in scoring position after Williams stole second. A wild pitch from Logan Beavis (Texas Tech) scored Bryce, and Williams crossed home plate after an RBI single from Potestio off the glove of Holcomb.

The frame ended with the Firebirds in front, 12-7.

Bourne stormed back in the eighth, as the bases became loaded for Holcomb after a Waite single, LeGrande walk and Kozeal free pass. Holcomb drove in both Waite and LeGrande on a two-run single that hit off of the pitcher's mound, to make it a 12-9. game.

Despite the Braves cutting the deficit in the eighth, they couldn't get anything going in the ninth, as Ryan Oshinskie (Brown) closed it out for the Firebirds to hand the Braves their first loss since July 13.
