FALMOUTH, Mass. – As Orleans Firebird Daniel Bucciero (Fordham) swung and picked up the third out in the top of the sixth, the Falmouth Commodores' 7-1 victory was clinched while the fog began to thicken, resulting in the game being called.
Commodore starting pitcher Tanner Smith (Harvard) gave Falmouth a good start picking up a pair of strikeouts and getting some backup from his defense picking off Roch Cholowsky (UCLA) at second base.
The bats got hot for Falmouth in the bottom of the first. Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma) and Luke Gaffney (Clemson) got a pair of singles, then Trent Carraway (Oregon State) made his Commodore debut hitting a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-0.
“It felt good,” Caraway said on making his Falmouth debut. “We got a ton of nice guys on the team, so I felt pretty comfortable coming into today and just had fun.”
Smith gave up three walks in the top of the third to give the Firebirds loaded bases, but he redeemed himself with a crucial strikeout. Caraway closed out Orleans time at bat with a lineout.
Willits led off with a walk to get the Commodores going in the bottom of the third. Another run was punched in for Falmouth from Gavin Kilen (transfer portal) off a single from Jayson Jones (transfer portal) to extend the lead 4-0.
The offensive momentum continued into the bottom of the fourth opening up with back-to-back walks for Karson Bowen (TCU) and Tab Tracy (Texas A&M). The bases got loaded with a single from Willits.
Kilen singled it to punch in two runs to make it 6-0, then Gaffney brought Willits home to add another run.
The fog gifted the Firebirds a triple and a run when Tracy wasn’t able to find the ball in center field. Tracy redeemed himself in the next play getting a flyout and Orleans was put away with a groundout from Gaffney.
“I didn’t know we had this many fans, so it’s pretty fun having people watch us,” Caraway said. “It’s fun to have people behind you.”
Up next, the Commodores (2-8) will stay home and host the Bourne Braves (3-6) at Guv Fuller Field today with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
