WAREHAM, Mass. — When the Cotuit Kettleers and Wareham Gatemen faced off June 15, there weren’t any runs scored until Case Sanderson hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning.
This time around, it was the complete opposite, as the Gatemen evened the season series with a 16-9 win Sunday.
The Ketts were on the board early when Ryne Farber (Auburn) scored on a wild pitch to put Cotuit up 1-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Gatemen blew the game open.
Against James Hays (Stetson) in his final start of the summer, Wareham's bats went full throttle. Chris McHugh (NC State) drove in the team’s first run on an RBI double to tie the game at one run each.
Wareham took a 3-1 lead on a wild pitch and a double.
Even though nearly each Gateman did damage to the Ketts’ arms Sunday, nobody did so more than Kollin Ritchie (Oklahoma State). The shortstop hit his first home run of the night in the bottom of the first, putting the home team up 5-1.
Hays returned to the bump in the second inning, but he couldn’t get the Gatemen offense under control. A stolen base sandwiched between two singles allowed for Wareham to take a 6-1 lead.
Turner broke the game open with a three-run homer to left field, putting Wareham up 9-1.
The Kettleers’ offense slowly started chipping at the lead, plating its second run of the game off a Nolan Stevens (Oklahoma) single in the fourth.
Jarren Advincula’s (Georgia Tech) speed came in handy in the fifth, when he cut the lead to 9-3 on a stolen base and a throwing error on the Wareham catcher.
The Gatemen bats were silenced for three innings at the hands of left-handed pitcher Beau Sampson (Tulane), who will move into the rotation due to Hays’ departure.
“That’s why we had Beau kind of tandem with Hays,” Kettleers head coach Loren Hibbs said of Sampson’s appearance. “Now, Beau is trained at the starter spot.”
However, when Gavin Jones (Kent State) was tapped for his first outing of the summer, the game seemed to get out of reach for Cotuit.
Back-to-back base hits from Wareham made the score 10-3, and Turner struck another ball over the fence with two runners on, increasing the lead to 10 in the sixth.

Heading into the top of the seventh, the Ketts were on mercy-rule watch. However, a single and two walks loaded the bases for Jack Natili (Cincinnati). The Bearcat, off the heels of his first home run of the season Saturday, launched the Ketts’ second grand slam of the season over the center-field wall, making it a 13-7 ballgame.
In the bottom of the inning, the Gatemen tacked on three more runs off of Max Haug (George Washington), taking a 16-7 lead.
The Kettleers plated two more runs in the top of the ninth, thanks to the red-hot Farber and a sacrifice fly from Natili.
After an off-day Monday, the Ketts will return to Lowell Park on Tuesday to take on the Orleans Firebirds at 5 p.m.
