
HYANNIS, Mass. — Chatham Anglers outfielder Jackson Freeman and Harwich Mariners left-handed pitcher Matthew Heiberger have been named the Franklin Sports Player of the Week and Cape League Pitcher of the Week, for the week of June 28-July 4, the league announced Sunday.
Freeman, a 20-year-old outfielder from Northwestern, led the Cape League in hits (nine) and total bases (16) over the last week, slashing .429/.455/.762/1.217. He added a home run, a double, a stolen base and six RBI to earn the award.
On the season, Freeman now ranks third in average (.357) and OPS (.992), and fourth in OBP (.438) and SLG (.554). Three of his RBIs were picked up in the July Fourth game against Orleans. Freeman and the Anglers host the league-leading Y-D Red Sox at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Heiberger, a 20-year-old lefty from Alabama, pitched 7 1/3 innings, tied for second most last week, and allowed no runs. He permitted just four baserunners on three hits and a walk, lowering his WHIP to a Cape League-best 0.53 on the season.
A .088 batting average against is a league-best mark for Heiberger, who also picked up a win in his relief appearance last Sunday. Heiberger and the Mariners are back at it on Tuesday, when they play the Falmouth Commodores at home at 6:30 p.m.
