The Y-D Red Sox lost 10-1 to the Bourne Braves on Saturday night, in what was arguably their worst loss of the season.
Dylan Tate’s third start of the summer was short-lived, marked by a plethora of hard contact. He failed to record a strikeout, generating just four whiffs during his brief outing.
Both teams allowed baserunners in the first inning, but Tate escaped the jam to keep the game scoreless. The final two outs of the frame came on lineouts—a theme that would become all too common at Doran Park.
Matthew Shorey (Vanderbilt) struggled to find command at the start of his outing, issuing a walk and hitting a batter to put runners on the corners. However, a failed double-steal attempt by Y-D ended the inning. Shorey quickly settled in, not allowing a single hit for the remainder of his appearance. He went five scoreless innings before handing things off to the bullpen.
Bourne’s offense erupted in the second inning, reaching base eight times and scoring six runs. Tate threw 33 pitches and faced 11 batters in the frame. With runners on first and second, a throwing error by Tate sparked what turned into a disastrous inning for Y-D.
To Bourne’s credit, their hits weren’t soft grounders—nearly every ball was hit at over 80 mph. Allowing hard contact was a major issue for Tate throughout the night. Even after Tate was removed, Bourne’s bats stayed hot, with the Braves recording three hits that left the bat at 100 mph or more.
Loud contact was a theme on both sides, continuing a recent trend for Y-D. Brayden Dowd and Will Gasparino were both victims of hard-hit outs on Saturday night—something several of their teammates have experienced over the past week.
Y-D scored their only run of the game in the sixth inning, thanks to an RBI single by Jake Bold. Jayce Tharnish (St. Bonaventure) made his debut with Y-D on Saturday night and quickly recorded his first hit with the team. He later scored on Bold’s single, cutting the deficit to nine runs.
Cody New and Jack Nobe came in to relieve Tate, combining for four total innings. New worked a scoreless frame in the third, while Nobe allowed one run over three innings. Justin Lee gave up three runs in the eighth but escaped a jam before Bourne could walk it off due to the mercy rule.
Y-D remains in first place, with an 11-5-2 record still the best in the CCBL. They’ll face off against Harwich on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
