CHATHAM, Mass. – The Chatham Anglers took advantage when first baseman Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) couldn’t get a handle on the ball from Will Bermudez’s (UC Irvine) single to punch in two runs to take the lead 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
Those were the final runs the Anglers saw and the Commodores went on to put up nine hits and nine runs to pull the upset at Veterans Field, 9-2, on Tuesday.
"Not trying to put too much pressure on each other is the biggest thing for us," Dylan Carey (Nebraska) said. "Having that trust in each other and the will to win is what has helped us hop on this little bit of a winning streak."
A lead-off single from Barkett got a rally moving and he made his way around the diamond back home to put Falmouth on the board 2-1 in the top of the third. Jayson Jones (Oklahoma State) granted the Commodores the lead, 3-2, with a two-run homer into left field.
The offensive spark Falmouth found continued into the top of the fourth with three singles and two RBIs from Donovan LaSalle (Oklahoma State) to further their lead to 5-2. Relief pitcher Jack Seppings (Brown) backed up the Commodores’ offense with some defense picking up his sixth strikeout of the night on Campbell Smithwick (Ole Miss).
The game settled in the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the seventh, Carey sent one past the fence for a solo home run to record his first homer of the summer to extend Falmouth to a 6-2 lead.
“I was down in the count,” Carey said. “I choked up a little bit on the bat, gave myself some more room for air regarding bat speed, and got a change-up, saw it up and was able to get a hold of it.”
Three walks in a row loaded the bases for the Commodores in the top of the eighth. A groundout from Barkett brought Karson Bowen (TCU) home. The bases re-loaded with a walk from Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma).
Carey brought another runner home with an RBI single. A sac fly from Jones pushed Falmouth to a seven-run lead, 9-2 in the top of the eighth.
Edward Hart (Duke) closed the game out on the mound for the Commodores in the bottom of the ninth. Hart closed with a 1-2-3 inning picking up two strikeouts and a lineout from Robby Bolin (Nebraska).
The Commodores (12-18) will return to Guv Fuller Field on Wednesday to host the Harwich Mariners (10-21) with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
Lefty Parker Coil (Arkansas) is the projected starting pitcher for Falmouth. He has a 5.75 ERA and has appeared in 20.1 innings this summer. Coil is 0-3 and his last start was against the Bourne Braves on July 18, where the Commodores went on to lose 5-1.
