Late offensive boost isn’t enough for Falmouth to overcome Bourne

BOURNE, Mass. – The Falmouth Commodores sparked a late rally in the top of the seventh and eighth, but the Bourne Braves put up a dominating 13 hits to clinch the 11-4 victory.

“They were getting pitches up and hitting on and executing their plan and just doing what they needed to do to beat us,” Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) said. “It was unfortunate to sit back and watch.”

The Braves got the best of the Commodores early after snagging three hits and four runs. A three-run homer from Tristan Bissetta (Clemson) gave Bourne a 4-0 lead after the bottom of the first.

Marek Houston (Wake Forest) loaded the bases for the Braves in the bottom of the second, pushing the Commodores to look to the bullpen. Justin Lessing (Middlebury) relieved Falmouth’s starting pitcher Parker Coil (Arkansas).

Lessing gave up three more runs to Bourne to extend its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second. The Braves didn’t let up off the gas there. The bottom of the third was damaging to Falmouth's winning chances falling further to 9-0.

The Braves punched in two more runs off an RBI double from Ethan Conrad (Wake Forest) and a sac fly from Chase Meggers (Oregon). Bourne’s lead reached double digits, 10-0, after a sac fly from Isaiah Jackson (Arizona State) in the bottom of the fourth.

The Commodores finally got on the board in the top of the seventh, 10-1, when Karson Bowen (TCU) walked in a run after a pitch hit Patrick Roche (Boston College). Scott Mudler (Oklahoma) also came home off a wild pitch to put up a second run, 10-2.

Garrett Michel (Virginia Tech) put up an RBI double to extend the Braves to 11-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Falmouth wasn’t out of it yet in the top of the eighth with an RBI single from Barkett and a run punched in off a wild pitch to sit at 11-4.

“Anytime I’m out there I try to play as hard as I can and score,” Barkett said.

The game was closed in the top of the ninth with a lineout, groundout and strikeout to give Bourne the final three outs to secure its fourth straight win to top Falmouth 11-4.

The Commodores (14-21) will host the Brewster Whitecaps (12-23) on Friday at Guv Fuller Field with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Righty Peter Phillips (Fairfield) is the projected starting pitcher for Falmouth. He has a 0.00 ERA and has appeared in 6.1 innings this summer. Phillips is 0-0 and this would be his first start of the summer.
