Travis Bazzana, a name that resonates with baseball fans across the globe, is on the brink of making history. As the top prospect for the 2024 MLB Draft, Bazzana's journey from Australia to the cusp of MLB stardom is nothing short of remarkable.
Growing up in a country where baseball is often overshadowed by other sports, Bazzana's passion for the game was sparked by his family.
“Being around the game young and the field, because my brothers and my dad played, I just found a natural passion and love for the game,” Bazzana shared.
His raw talent led him to Oregon State University, where he shattered records and solidified his place as a top prospect. At Oregon State, Bazzana became the all-time leader in hits and home runs for the Beavers, a feat even more impressive considering the school's storied baseball history. His .415 batting average, 28 home runs and an OPS of 1.512 in his final season are an attest to his skill at the plate.
“I grew so much as a person, more than just a player,” Bazzana said, reflecting on his time at Oregon State. “The coaches really helped me learn more about myself and understand the value of why we play this game.”
Bazzana’s impact wasn’t just confined to Oregon State. During the summer of 2023, he came to Falmouth, leaving an indelible mark with the Commodores. With a .375 batting average, six home runs and 31 RBI, Bazzana’s standout performance earned him the 2023 Pat Sorenti MVP award and the Thurman Munson Award as the league’s batting champion. His host mom, Linda Peters, spoke highly of his character, noting his kindness and consideration, traits that complement his athletic talent.
As the MLB Draft approaches, Bazzana is slated to become the first Australian to be selected first overall. His advanced approach at the plate, combined with his raw power and base-stealing ability, makes him an exciting prospect.
“I don’t really see limits on myself as a player, and I just want to see how far I can take it if I put my all into being the best baseball player I can be,” Bazzana said.
Scouts have taken notice of his all-around game, with many confident in his ability to play second base at the professional level. His athleticism, range and arm strength have put an end to concerns about his defensive capabilities. Bazzana’s journey has been one of setting new standards, and his potential selection at the top of the draft is proof of his hard work and determination when it comes to the game.
As Bazzana awaits the draft, his excitement is appreciable.
“It's getting close now, and I haven’t been able to really process it much, but the last couple days, it started to feel like I’m waiting for Christmas,” he shared.
For Bazzana, the future is bright, and the baseball world is eagerly watching to see where his path will lead him next.
Commodores fans and baseball enthusiasts alike will be tuning in Sunday to watch the MLB Draft on MLB Network and ESPN, where Bazzana’s name is expected to be called early.
