Falmouth upsets Cape League's top team Yarmouth-Dennis

FALMOUTH, Mass. – Gavin Turley (Oregon State) checked into the game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and put up a single to grant the Falmouth Commodores a 3-2 lead to help push them to a 4-2 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Monday.

“They’re a good team, we have a good team, so it was a competitive matchup,” Scott Mudler (Oklahoma) said. “Not a lot of runs were being scored, so defense was crucial during the game. We did a great job in defense. They did a good job on defense and a couple hits snuck through and helped us out there at the end.”

The matchup remained scoreless going into the fourth inning. Falmouth starting pitcher Sean Brennan (Keystone) secured his fifth strikeout to retire the third Y-D batter. Red Sox starting pitcher Ethan Firoved (Pitt) got himself a three-strikeout inning to put up his eighth strikeout of the night to round out the fourth inning.

The bottom of the fifth saw some momentum from the Commodores hitters with a leadoff walk from Mudler. Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) got a base hit single, but he was robbed of an RBI when Mudler got rung up before getting safe to home plate.

Y-D put itself in a position to break the scoring drought with two runners in scoring position after a hit-by-pitch and single in the top of the sixth. The Red Sox recorded a two-RBI single from Talmadge LeCroy (South Carolina) to take the lead, 2-0.

The Commodores loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth after three walks were granted. Falmouth joined Y-D on the scoreboard, making it 2-2 with a two-RBI single from Mudler.

“I was just trying to put the ball in play with the bases loaded there,” Mudler said. “So I put it in play the other way and I got through the hole.”

For the first time since the bottom of the sixth, the Commodores got into scoring position again in the bottom of the eighth with a sac bunt from Zion Rose (Louisville). Donovan LaSalle (Oklahoma State) joined the runners in scoring position with a walk to load the bases.

Pinch-hitter Turley gave Falmouth a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to bring Jayson Jones (Oklahoma State) home. Trent Caraway (Oregon State) also came home off a balk from Dylan Delvecchio (St. Mary’s).

Riley Stanford (Georgia Tech) took the mound for the top of the ninth to close out the game. Stanford and his defense put up a clean inning with a quick three groundouts at first base with Barkett to clinch the save.

The Commodores (14-19) will travel to McKeon Park to take on the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (20-13) on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Righty Mac Heuer (Texas Tech) is the projected starting pitcher for Falmouth. He has a 4.91 ERA and has appeared in 3 2/3 innings this summer. Heuer is 0-0 and his last start was against the Chatham Anglers on July 23, when the Commodores went on to win, 9-2.
