Falmouth splits doubleheader with Cotuit

FALMOUTH, Mass. – The Falmouth Commodores and the Cotuit Kettleers went toe-to-toe in back-to-back matchups on Saturday to complete the July 25 matchup at Lowell Field that was suspended due to rain, ending in the Commodores favor 7-5.

The game was left at 2-1 at the top of the third in the Kettleer's favor with a two-RBI double from Easton Winfield (Louisiana Monroe). The RBI for Falmouth was from a sac fly from Dylan Carey (Nebraska).

The Commodores came out hot in the resumption with a two-RBI single from Zion Rose (Louisville) in the top of the third and a two-RBI double from Karson Bowen (TCU) in the top of the fourth to take the lead 5-2.

“I stuck with the approach and it just kept working,” Bowen said. “I’ve made progress the whole summer and it’s been really fun to keep going out there and just playing.”

Cotuit got itself a pair of runs with a two-RBI single from Winfield to inch closer to Falmouth’s lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth. Falmouth pulled away again, 7-4, with another pair of runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI double from Trent Caraway (Oregon State) and an RBI single from Jack Bell (TCU).

Relief pitcher Edward Hart (Duke) gave up three straight singles to give the Kettleers loaded bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Bowen got back-to-back outs at home to save the inning, then Hart finished it off with two strikeouts and a groundout in the bottom of the ninth to cut Cotuit short.

“Sometimes it works out like that,” Bowen said. “There haven’t been a lot of those this summer and there’s a few of them in one game and I’m just happy to hold on to the ball and get the guys out.”

These two teams saw each other again a few hours later, but this time at Guv Fuller Field. The 2024 Commodores took the Guv for one final time.

“I’m one of like four who’s been here since day one of practice, so it’s really cool to say I’ve been here the whole time,” Bowen said. “It’s sad too. It’s been such a great summer, such a great opportunity and it’s been good for me.”

The Kettleers struck first, but Patrick Roche (Boston College) struck back with an RBI single to get even 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Falmouth took the lead 2-1 with a run from Rose in the bottom of the third.

The Kettleers evened it out 2-2 off a sac fly from Luke Hanson (Virginia) in the top of the fourth. They were then able to claim the lead 3-2 with a run punched in by Matt Klein (Louisville) in the top of the sixth.

The top of the seventh propelled Cotuit to a 7-2 lead with six hits, one walk and four runs and ultimately the victory. Falmouth was forced to play catchup in the eighth and ninth but struggled to bring any more runners home.

The Commodores (16-22) will play their final game of the summer at Spillane Field on Sunday to take on the Wareham Gatemen (21-17) with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
