Falmouth continues to claw at playoff spot taking down Harwich

FALMOUTH, Mass. – The Falmouth Commodores moved out of the Harwich Mariners’ reach when Marines’ relief pitcher Jason Finkelstein (Babson) gave up four walks, a single and three runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the Commodores up 7-1.

Francis Ferguson (Eastern Connecticut State) closed out an 8-1 win for Falmouth putting up two strikeouts, two lineouts, a flyout and a groundout between the top of the eighth and ninth innings.

“Up and down the lineup, everyone’s producing and it’s all come together,” Trent Caraway (Oregon State) said. “We’re having fun, we’re playing loose and having a good time. That’s what’s getting us to winning.”

Falmouth stayed on the offensive high it’s been on with a strong start in the bottom of the first. A sac fly from Caraway and an RBI single from Gavin Turley (Oregon State) put the Commodores up 2-0.

The Commodores found themselves in scoring position again after an infield single from Zion Rose (Louisville) and a throwing error from Cade Kurland (Florida) to advance Rose and Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma) to second and third base.

Caraway put up another sac fly to bring Willits home and move Rose to third. Turley followed with an RBI double to put Falmouth up 4-0.

Harwich picked up its first hit of the night with a single from Cam Maldonado (Northeastern). Maldonado was able to punch in a run while Macon Winslow (Duke) grounded out to get the Mariners on the board, 4-1.

The Commodores pulled away more in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs to extend to 7-1. Finkelstein struggled on the mound for Harwich, but Falmouth was put away with an out at home plate on Willits.

Offensive movement settled until the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Scott Mudler (Oklahoma) to extend Falmouth’s lead to 8-1. The reigns were then handed off to Ferguson to finish it off for a third straight Commodores win.

The Commodores (13-18) are taking on the Cotuit Kettleers (20-10) on Thursday at Lowell Park with the first pitch set for 5 p.m.

Righty MJ Seo (LSU) is the projected starting pitcher for Falmouth. He has a 2.70 ERA and has appeared in 3.1 innings this summer. Seo is 0-1 and his last start was against the Harwich Mariners on July 19, where the Commodores went on to win 4-3.
