Eight no-hit innings from Michalak, Stern highlight thrilling 6-5 victory in Brewster

After a dominant victory on home confines the night previous, the Falmouth Commodores (2-0) traveled 45 minutes eastward in search of a second consecutive victory to open their 2026 season.

Their opponent, the Brewster Whitecaps (1-1), rode the momentum of a late-game five run comeback victory over Hyannis back to Stony Brook Field for their home opener. They’d give just as much trouble to Falmouth on Sunday afternoon, but the Commodores withstood some strong ninth-inning Whitecap waves to emerge from the seas of battle with a win.

Eight innings of one-run, no-hit ball pitched by Jake Michalak (Ohio State) and Nate Stern (TCU) preceded a final frame that defied all expectations of those in attendance for the second game of the season.

The afternoon tilt started with a jarring juxtaposition with runners in scoring position. The Commodores were able to place runners on first and second in the top of the first, but LSU hurler Mavrick Rizy averted early trouble as Riley Jackson (Houston) popped out and Ben Slanker (Louisville) went down swinging to end the inning.

Conversely, the Whitecaps manufactured a run when afforded the opportunity in the bottom of the frame – an opportunity that came in the form of an Adam Magpoc (San Diego State) walk. Magpoc blazed from first to third with a pair of stolen bases, setting the table for Jake Lambdin (Duke) to knock him in.

After a hasty 1-2-3 inning from the Falmouth starter in Michalak, the bottom half of the ‘Dores order tested Rizy and created traffic on the bases. As the lineup card flipped, Fabio Peralta (Miami) found a two-out infield single to load the bases, but Rizy once again wiggled out of trouble by freezing Ty Kaunas (Texas Tech) for the fifth strikeout of his solid three-inning outing.

The Commodores found their breakthrough in the third, when Jimmy Nugent (Louisville) sent Falmouth’s first home run of the season soaring through a few lawn chairs and onto the Cappy Pavillion hill beyond the center field fence. The two-run shot bolted the ‘Dores ahead, 2-1.

Michalak and Stern kept the Brewster score frozen at one.

The Commodores’ Sunday starter stranded Whitecaps on first and second in the fourth, as he ended his day with the first inning run from the opposition being the only blemish on his statline.

Pitching coach Paul Evans had some high praise for Michalak’s change of pace, saying “Mich had a good sinker and a good changeup going. Got some ground balls [and] pitched well.”

Stern took over for the ‘Dores in the fifth and followed suit behind their starter, quickly finding his groove by inducing weak contact – a major theme in his relief appearance.

“Stern was great, really good mix of everything,” Evans said when breaking down Stern’s performance. “Fastball, curveball, mixed in his change up against the lefties, and then showed a slider at times. He was amazing.”

Stern cruised through the next three innings, continuing to evade the barrels of the Whitecap order while racking up the strikeouts. He’d end with four in just as many innings of work, the X-factor being the introduction of a slider as he went deeper into the Whitecap order.

“Anytime you're giving the hitter 4 pitches to look for, as a hitter, it gets a little more difficult,” Evans said.

For the Commodores’ pitching staff, the bigger picture was backing an offense that struggled against some of the better arms in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Coach Evans had seen that exact scenario play out a million times in his over 30 year coaching career.

His motto? “Throw up as many zeros as you can. Every run's like a piece of gold. Don't let anybody steal it from you.”

But the Commodores began to crank up the offensive engine in the eighth. Peralta smoked an RBI double to put Falmouth up 3-1.

The ‘Dores doubled their score in the sixth with quality hitting from the middle of their order. A single from Jackson, followed by walks from Slanker and Nugent, loaded the bases for FAU’s John Martinez. He’d poke a single to left to pad the Commodore advantage to three, which became five after Anothony Diaz (New Mexico) drove in another two runs with a single of his own.

With a heavy weight on his shoulders and the CCBL’s first no-hitter since 2022 on the line, the youth of the Commodores – its youngest player in Jack Durso (Miami) – was given the ball in the ninth. Brewster was prepared for the left-hander, breaking up Falmouth’s no-no with a trio of singles from Jacob Lee (VCU), Petey Craska (North Alabama) and pinch-hitter Alexander Peck (Arkansas). Dave Harvey (Ohio State) cleared the bases with an opposite field grand slam, injecting hope into the Whitecap crowd as the Commodore lead was reduced to one in the blink of an eye.

But for the ‘Dores’ pitching staff, this was pushback that they welcomed.

“No matter what sport you're involved in, whether it's a 5 run lead or a 3 run lead, somebody's going to make a run at you at some point in the game,” said Evans. “You gotta be prepared for that.”

Incoming Georgia Tech transfer Tyler Guerin was prepared for a potential comeback bid from the Whitecaps as he readied himself in the bullpen, saying “ I was just thinking about coming in and slowing it down and sticking true to myself.”

With the game in the balance, Will Moore (Indiana) laced a hard-hit ground ball off Guerin into the 5-6 hole. A diving stop from Martinez and a laser across the diamond not only gave the ‘Dores their first out of the inning, but the momentum Guerin needed to weather the storm and put away the never-say-die Whitecaps.

“That was fun to watch. It was a great play,” he said. “It made me more confident with throwing the ball in the zone [and] trusting my defense.”

Guerin hunkered down and blew away Michael Torres (Miami) and Magpoc to slam the ‘Dore and secure the 6-5 win for Falmouth’s second straight win of the season. The 2-0 start mirrors its start in 2019, when Falmouth finished first in the West Division under the late Jeff Trundy. The Commodores are once again in first place in the West, tied with Cotuit. The Commodores will look to preserve their perfect record against the Red Sox in Yarmouth-Dennis tomorrow, Monday, June 15 at 5:00 p.m.
