The Y-D Red Sox lost their fourth game of the season on Wednesday, scoring only twice — both runs coming in the second inning. The game was cut short due to weather, with Hyannis winning by a final score of 3-2.
After a quiet first inning, Will Baker doubled with two outs in the second. Dean Carpentier, the team’s hottest hitter as of late, followed by launching a curveball 390 feet to left field. It was his second home run in as many days and extended his hit streak to four games.
In the bottom of the second inning, Gabe Camacho (UCSD) was hit by a pitch to reach first base. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hunter Watkins and immediately scored on a double by Jeff Lougee (Duke). After working a long at-bat, Hayden Federico (Ole Miss) blooped an RBI single into center field to tie the game. Both teams plated two runs in the inning, sending them back to square one after two frames.
The Y-D offense went quiet in the middle innings, failing to reach base in the third or fourth. Aside from the second inning, when both teams scored two runs, pitching dominated the game.
Richie Roman (UH) started for the Harbor Hawks, allowing two runs over five innings. He threw just 64 pitches, inducing plenty of weak contact. Both teams had their share of hard-hit outs, with Jason Walk (OU) making two outstanding catches to start the game.
Chandler Dorsey (LSU) and Zach Edwards (OSU) combined to throw the final three scoreless innings, with Edwards striking out three in his lone frame.
Y-D used only two pitchers, with the shortened game helping to preserve the bullpen. Watkins went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Michael Catalano, who has been a impressive arm out of the bullpen this summer, followed with 3.1 dominant innings, striking out six to help close out the game. He retired nine straight batters during his outing— one of the most impressive stretches by a Y-D pitcher this season.
Back-to-back doubles by Ryan McKay (MSU) and Jaxon Willits (OU) gave the Harbor Hawks a 3–2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Storms rolled in shortly after McKay crossed the plate, prompting a lightning delay. The game was officially called after eight innings.
The two division leaders will face off on Friday at Red Wilson Field, for the July 4th matchup scheduled for 5 p.m.
