The Mariners are 24 games into the season and are in third place in the East Division with a 15-9 record. This past week the Mariners went 2-3, losing at Brewster and Cotuit and at home against Hyannis. The Mariners picked up wins at Y-D and when hosting Chatham.
The Mariners offense was the fifth-highest-scoring offense in the league. The Mariners’ offense struggled during the first two games of the week against Brewster and Cotuit but ended strong after beating Y-D handily 9-3. The pitching staff finished the week with the fourth-highest ERA with 3.48.
This week, our trio is all pitchers, two coming from Saturday's game against Chatham when Harwich had a no-hitter after nine innings. TJ Ziermann, Jakob Schulz, and Peyton Soske are the Trident Trio this week.
Jakob Schulz | Houston commit | LHP
Jakob Schulz was the starting pitcher for the Mariners when they played Chatham Saturday. The Mariners needed a spark badly after dropping the last three games and falling out of second place in the division. Schulz pitched five innings of no-hit baseball for Harwich, striking out 10 Anglers as well. Chatham’s offense was rolling going into their game against the Mariners and Schulz was able to completely stall them with his impressive offspeed pitches.
"Just getting in the zone early and getting all five of my pitches working. When I'm in the zone, I trust what I'm doing, and that's about it," said Schulz.
TJ Ziermann | UNCW | RHP
TJ Ziermann came into the game in the top of the sixth inning of the Chatham game after Schulz walked the first two first batters of the inning. Ziermann retired the next three batters all by strikeout. Ziermann finished with seven strikeouts over his four innings of work in the Chatham game Saturday without allowing a hit. A first-inning Anglers run after a wild pitch would be the only run scored in the first eight and a half innings of baseball.
Ziermann and Schulz were a part of the first nine-inning no-hitter since 2016. The Mariners came back against the Anglers in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and ultimately win after a Jackson Hotchkiss’ walk-off.
Peyton Soske | Columbia | RHP
Peyton Soske appeared in two games for the Mariners this week as a reliever against Brewster and Y-D. In the Brewster game Thursday, Soske came into the game in the top of the fifth inning and pitched 2 ⅓ innings. Six of the seven outs Soske recorded came by strikeout.
Soske also appeared in the Mariners win against Y-D on Sunday. Soske came into the game in the top of the sixth inning and pitched two innings without allowing a run. Only three Red Sox reached base with Soske on the mound Sunday.
Soske finished the week pitching 4 ⅓ innings while allowing just one run and striking out eight batters. Soske also capped off his week by signing with the New York Yankees.
