First baseman Trey Hawsey stole the show with two home runs in the Hyannis Harbor Hawks' 5-3 win over the Cotuit Kettleers on Tuesday night at McKeon Park.
Hawsey went 3-4 on the night, including the two homers. Hawsey said he was simply “seeing it good tonight.”
“It’s been kind of a struggle here lately, but I finally found my click and started to roll.” Hawsey said.
Coming off of a victory over the Falmouth Commodores the night before, Hyannis manager Mitch Karraker said this win was another all-around complete one.
“We backed it up with another really good one. We threw a ton of strikes, I don’t think we walked very many guys which is good defensively,” Karraker said. “Even offensively, 11 hits and five runs. We’re going pretty good right now.”
The Harbor Hawks began with three 1-2-3 innings with pitcher Jonah Barkoff on the mound in his debut game. Brayden Sharp then came in from the dugout and only gave up one hit to the Kettleers. Finally, Cohen Gomez came in to close for the Harbor Hawks and seal their victory. The three pitchers had 12 strikeouts total on the night.
Hawsey said that the performance from the dugout is the key to more success for the Harbor Hawks.
“The dugout just needs to keep staying up like we have the last two games, I think it’s led to great success,” Hawsey said. “If we can keep that up, I think we’ll be fine.”
On the offensive side, the Harbor Hawks had 11 hits between five players, three of them coming from Hawsey and three more from designated hitter Kyle Alivo. Of the five runs, four were homers. Two came from Hawsey and the others from shortstop Jordan Lodise and third baseman Matt Ineich.
Karraker said newcomers like Barkoff and Ineich have been “really fun to watch” as they continue to contribute to the team's success.
“They’re getting in there and they’re just competing,” Karraker said. “They’re not wide-eyed, they’re not nervous, they feel really comfortable when they’re out there and it shows.”
The Harbor Hawks started off hot offensively with a solo home run by Ineich in the first inning, his first of the season. In the fourth inning, Ineich got on base on a single to center field, and Lodise followed up with a two-run shot. Hawsey put the Harbor Hawks ahead even further with a moonball to right center field.
The Kettleers were able to get on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run by catcher Jesse Di Maggio. However, Hawsey came back to hit another home run in the sixth inning and put the Harbor Hawks up 5-1.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Kettleers had a chance to turn things around in the ninth.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Di Maggio hit an RBI single and sent two runners home to leave the score 5-3. However, Gomez and the Harbor Hawks defense refused to let up the lead, and a ground out by Kettleers right fielder Landon Beaver sealed the deal.
The Harbor Hawks are now 6-9 on the season after their three-game home slate and look ahead to face the Bourne Braves at Doran Park on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
