BOURNE, Mass. — Bourne went down, then took the lead, gave it up, then took the lead again and never looked back.
Prior to Tuesday night’s win over Falmouth, Bourne hadn’t won a game since July 8 against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
With the help of five runs between the sixth and seventh inning, the Braves made it two straight against Hyannis and two wins in a row with a 7-6 victory on Wednesday evening.
The Harbor Hawks got on the board first in the third, starting with a Ryan McKay (Michigan State) walk. After a steal put him at second, he then scored on a blooper hit to center field by Gabe Camacho (UC San Diego) to make it a 1-0 score.
Bourne took the lead right back in the bottom of the frame, as Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt) scored both himself and Ryan Cooney (Oregon) following his single on his second home run of the year to take the 2-1 advantage.
Hyannis then knotted it up at 2-2 in the ensuing half inning, as Deitan Lachance (Mclennan junior college) reached on a fielding error by Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt). After a walk from Charlie Bates (Stanford), Sawyer Black (North Carolina) then threw down a bunt, where he reached on a throwing error from Nate Whysong (Wake Forest) that scored Lachance.
The lead then went the Harbor Hawks way in the fifth, as Jack Schaffner (North Dakota State) found himself on second base after a single and an error from Logan Hughes (Texas Tech). A Jayce Dobie (Nevada) single put two runners on base, which had the pair then touch home plate on a two-run double by Jeff Lougee (Duke) to take the 4-2 lead.

Despite the two-run advantage, it didn’t last long as Bourne took it right back in the bottom of the inning. Waite ripped a triple, then scored on a RBI single from Jon LeGrande (St. John’s). LeGrande put himself in scoring position after a steal and a balk.
After a Hughes walk, LeGrande would cash in on an RBI single from Kuhio Aloy (Arkansas). Hughes then advanced to third, where shortly afterward became the go-ahead run on a RBI sacrifice fly from Holcomb to make it a 5-4 game in favor of the Braves.
Bourne extended the lead the next time the bats came to the plate, as Campbell Smithwick (Oklahoma State) reached third after a double and a wild pitch from Hunter Dietz (Arkansas). Following a walk from Waite, where he then stole second, Smithwick scored on another wild pitch from Dietz.
Waite found his way to third on the aforementioned wild pitch, where he then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Hughes to put the score at 7-4.
Hyannis cut the deficit in the seventh, as Schaffner got halfway to home plate after a single and a throwing error from Holcomb. He then scored on the RBI of the day from Lougee on a two-base knock to have the score read 7-5.
Hyannis cut it to one in the ninth, starting with a McKay single where he reached second after a groundout the following at-bat. He then scored after a throwing error by Waite. Camacho then got hit by a pitch to put two runners on base, but Logan Beavis (Texas Tech) held off the late rally to have the Braves take the 7-6 victory.
Bourne Braves Player of the Game
After going quiet in the past two games, Ryker Waite was the dangerous presence at the plate that he’s been all season for the Braves, going 2-for-3 with a home run as well as three runs, two RBIs, a walk, a hit by pitch and a stolen base.
Key moment
The five-run swing between the six and the seventh inning pushed the Braves over the top. Throughout the season the runs scored in the later portion of the ballgame often has resulted in the team trailing and then ultimately coming up short, but in the win over the Harbor Hawks the script was flipped.
A look ahead
Bourne (11-13-1, 23 points) will have a second consecutive game at Doran Park, as its Thursday matchup will be against the Brewster Whitecaps (15-10-1, 31 points). Last time the squads met the Braves delivered their worst game of the season, dropping the contest 14-0 in a matchup that lasted seven innings due to the mercy rule.
