In baseball, a spotlight often shines on the hitter at the plate—everyone watching and waiting for a big hit to happen. However, pitchers can be the unsung heroes of the game. They can throw for multiple innings at a time and are a crucial part of keeping the team in a game.

Stanford’s Trevor Moore helped keep Y-D in the game Monday in Brewster. He came in to close during the ninth and locked in another win for Y-D. In that inning, he collected two strikeouts He currently leads the league in saves, with four after Monday’s game.

Southeastern University’s Ramsey David started on the mound for Y-D in Monday’s game. He pitched for four innings and struck out five batters total, three of them in the first inning. The right-hander said his slider was the key to his success.

“I was able to land the slider early and got a lot of swing misses on it,” David said. “That’s when I knew it was working well.”

On the third strike of his third strikeout, David hit a speed of 99 mph. He said he had hit 99 once before that moment, but that was his first time hitting 99 in a game.

David said the energy in the Y-D bullpen is a good, new feel for him. With multiple pitchers coming together from colleges and universities across the country, the bullpen can feel a lot different from each player’s collegiate team.

“Even though it’s summer ball, everyone gets along well,” David said. “Everybody pulls for each other and it’s pretty cool to be a part of that.”

Aiden Moffett pitched an inning in Monday’s game, making his debut for Y-D. The former LSU right-hander gave up no hits and notched a strikeout on the mound. Moffett said while he only threw a couple of sliders, his fastball worked well for him.

“It was all about getting out there and being confident,” Moffett said. “If something wasn’t working, I just slowed it down and got back in the moment.”

Earlier this month, Moffett entered the transfer portal following the completion of his second season with LSU. He said this upcoming week should provide more clarity on his next move.

“I might visit a couple of places soon and see how things go,” Moffett said. “But for now it’s all about being patient.”

Other pitchers that have been doing well for Y-D include Kennesaw State’s Braden Osbolt and Westmont College’s Bryan Peck. Osbolt currently has 11 strikeouts, which is the third-highest in the Cape League. Peck entered Monday’s game to pitch the sixth and seventh innings against the Whitecaps, collecting two strikeouts.
