The Hyannis Harbor Hawks ended Saturday night’s game against the Orleans Firebirds with a 6-3 victory, their first win in three games. With the win, the Hawks stayed undefeated at home this season.
Parker Brosius hit a 366-foot, no-doubt home run on the second pitch of his first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning to give the Hawks their first run.
“I was trying to be ready a little bit earlier. I got a pitch that I liked and I put a good swing on it,” Brosius said.
In the top of the second, the Firebirds led their offensive frame off with a walk and a home run, making the score 2-1. The Hyannis defense then secured three outs after that to keep the one-run deficit.
With two outs on the board in the third inning, Michael Dattalo hit a double. Mason White, who was playing in his first game with the Harbor Hawks, scored Dattalo on a line drive down the right field line, marking the first triple of the season for Hyannis. Camden Janik also singled, scoring White. Nick Groves kept things going momentarily, advancing Janik on a single up the middle, but it was to no avail. In the first three innings, the Harbor Hawks recorded 10 hits.
Janik singled to right, marking the first base runner of the bottom of the second inning. Groves then singled through the five-six hole, and Kane Kepley hit a laser down the left field line loading the bases. Brosius hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring the tying run and tallying his second RBI of the night.
Janik, a key part of the lineup Saturday, had three base hits, one of which scored an RBI.
“I just tried to stick with my approach, trusting what I’ve worked on all year, having faith in God and just trusting that the guys behind me are going to pick me up,” Janik said.
Nearing the end of the sixth, Kepley walked and Brosius advanced his teammate on a sacrifice bunt. Kepley was left stranded at second base. The Hawks were held scoreless for three innings straight through the middle of the contest, and the score remained 4-2.
Adding insurance was Wallace Clark with a two-out double with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. The hit had an exit velocity of 92 mph, scoring two runners in the process.
“I think a lot of [the game] has to do with energy and bringing the energy every day, being ready to play,” Clark said. "... When we keep the energy high, the momentum is usually pretty good, and we were pretty successful [Saturday].”
Tulane’s Jacob Moore took the mound at the top of the seventh for Hyannis. He held the Firebirds to one earned run scored by a sacrifice fly to Kepley in center field. Aaron Mishoulam (Michigan State) and Sean Fitzpatrick (Arizona State) were also put in for relief in later innings, holding the Firebirds scoreless.
The Harbor Hawks will take on the Wareham Gateman at 6 p.m. Sunday at Spillane Field.
