Falmouth’s second 'Hero of the Game' honored during Commodores' Military Appreciation Night

On Friday night, before, and during another Commodores victory, the team celebrated another Mass State Lottery Hero of the Game. It’s not every day you’ll see a 21-gun salute at a baseball game. But it’s not every day that you’ll find someone worthy. The late Col. Gerald Charles Potamis, however, more than fits the bill of worthy. A former lieutenant turned Army Ranger, “Jerry” Potamis served his nation for over 30 years in Vietnam and later both Gulf Wars. During the fourth inning, Potamis’ wife, Genie, accepted a team-signed bat from Dores Vice President Steve Irish.

Genie said the ceremony was “quite an honor” and that her husband would have been “very proud.” Potamis also served on the board of directors for the Commodores until his passing back in April.

But what made Friday particularly special was that while the former colonel received his well-earned recognition, our entire military community was honored as well. Both every active-duty and veteran were asked to come onto the field before the game for a deserving round of applause from all in attendance.

The Falmouth Commodores wouldn’t be what they are today without the help and support from this one-of-a-kind community. So, any chance we have to give back to those who either helped build the program, or defend our right overseas to play the great game of baseball, we take it.
