After four hitless innings to open the game, the Hyannis Harbor Hawks found just enough offense to defeat the Bourne Braves 3-1 on Thursday.
The victory improved Hyannis to 15-15, marking the first time the Harbor Hawks have reached the .500 mark this season.
More importantly, the win moved Hyannis within one and a half games of first-place Bourne in the West Division. With two meetings remaining against the defending Cape Cod League champions over the next week, the Hawks have a prime opportunity to gain ground in the standings.
Hyannis has won four of its last five games, including a current three-game winning streak, thanks in large part to a pitching staff that has consistently kept opponents in check. With Thursday’s win marking the three-quarter point of the regular season, Harbor Hawks manager Mitch Karraker credited his pitchers for fueling the team’s recent success.
"I'm really proud of the focus from our guys tonight, especially the pitching staff," Karraker said. "They've been really, really good, and they showed it again tonight. Cohen [Gomez] and Truitt [Webb] were just lights out, as always. It was a great effort all around."
Jonah Barkoff (Oregon) got the start for Hyannis, tossing four scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Van Froling (UC Santa Barbara) and the bullpen.
The Hawks broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Bourne catcher Brice Estep’s throw sailed over the head of shortstop Eliot Medlock on a stolen-base attempt by Henry Zenor (South Carolina Upstate). The error allowed Caden Miller (Texas-San Antonio) to score easily from third, giving Hyannis a 1-0 lead.
The Braves answered in the following inning. Matt Bolton lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Burke-Lee Mabeus from third, tying the game at 1-1.
With the game tied 1-1 entering the eighth inning, Hyannis’s small-ball approach once again created a scoring opportunity—this time, leading to the game-winning run.
Taylor Kirk (UCLA) opened the inning with a leadoff double, and JC Davis (Rice) dropped a perfectly placed bunt in front of the mound. Rushing to make a play, Bourne pitcher Jackson Kircher skipped his throw past the first baseman, allowing Davis to reach second while Kirk scored to give Hyannis a 2-1 lead on the error.
In that moment, Davis wasn’t looking to do too much. He knew the key was simply applying pressure on the defense.
"Tie game, late in the eighth—that's the play you’ve got to make right there," Davis said. "It’s a no-brainer, especially after Kirk hustled out that leadoff double. I just wanted to make them make a play, and when he threw it away, I was happy to see it work out."
Hyannis added an insurance run in the ninth inning when Henry Zenor (South Carolina Upstate) delivered an RBI single to score Caden Miller (Texas-San Antonio), extending the Harbor Hawks’ lead to 3-1.
With a chance to close the gap on Bourne atop the West Division standings, Karraker isn't concerned with the bigger picture. Instead, his focus remains on continuing to improve each day.
"The goal has always been to get better each day," Karraker said. "I still think we have a lot of work to do offensively, starting with getting better swings off. We scored runs in different ways tonight and have been running the bases well, so we just need to keep doing what we’re doing. Don’t focus on the big-picture stuff, and we’ll be all right."
Hyannis returns home Friday to host the Falmouth Commodores before traveling back to Bourne for a rematch with the Braves on Saturday. The second meeting in three days between the teams could have significant implications in the West Division race.
The Harbor Hawks are expected to start Kevin Robinson (Northwestern State), making his Cape Cod League debut. Falmouth is expected to counter with Brayden Bergman (Auburn). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
