The Gatemen (0-3) hosted the Chatham Anglers (1-2) on Monday, hoping the third time would be the charm to get their first win of the season. After back-to-back tough losses, the team was motivated and eager to put themselves into the win column.

However, it did not go their way. One bad inning in the fourth, resulting in seven Anglers runs, plus a dominant pitcher in Nate Taylor (Georgia), who struck out 10 batters in four scoreless innings, resulted in the team’s third consecutive loss to start the season.

The Gatemen now find themselves as the only winless team in the Cape Cod Baseball League, something they are hoping to change in tonight’s home game against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

Y-D (1-1-1) is coming off a home game tie against Bourne that finished in the eighth do to darkness at Red Wilson Field. It’s the first time the Gatemen have played the Red Sox since last July 25, when they lost 3-2 in seven innings. They struggled against Y-D in 2024, going 1-3 in the four matchups.

This is the last game of the first four-game stretch of the season for Wareham, and they aim to end it on a positive note before Wednesday’s Cape Cod Baseball League workout at Fenway Park.

Starting Pitchers

Starting for the Gatemen tonight is Logan Baisley (FGCU). The rising sophomore right-hander from Land O’ Lakes, FL, finished his spring with a 2-1 record with a 4.60 ERA and 29 ⅓ innings pitched in 11 appearances.

During that span, he had 26 punchouts, allowed 32 hits, 16 runs (15 earned), and 8 walks. He had a college career-high 10 strikeouts against Austin Peay on May 24. Tonight is his Cape Cod Baseball League debut as a starter.

On the other side, Carson Ballard (Georgia Tech) gets the starting nod for the Red Sox. The redshirt sophomore finished his spring with a 1-3 record, plus a save, and a 5.70 ERA in 17 appearances with the Yellow Jackets. In 36 ⅓ innings, he allowed 39 hits, 23 earned runs, 7 home runs, and six walks while getting 38 strikeouts.

This is Ballard’s second summer with Y-D, as he finished last summer with a 0-1 record and 3.63 ERA in 5 appearances, 4 of them being starts. In that span, he allowed 21 hits, 10 runs (7 earned), and 4 walks, while striking out 17 batters.

Players to Watch

For the Gatemen, Ty Dalley (Clemson) has been beyond solid. On Monday, he grabbed the Gatemen’s first hit of the night, then scored the first of Wareham’s two runs. He also made a fantastic diving catch out in left field in the bottom of the fifth to take away a double.

Dalley started the year playing first base for the Gatemen, then moved to left field on Monday for the first time this season, showing a lot of versatility, something Gatemen Field Manager Ryan Smyth loves to have in his arsenal.

Speaking of versatility, the Gatemen got to see the first appearance of Caden McDonald (Florida) on Monday. McDonald, the rising redshirt sophomore, is a two-way player, being able to play first base and pitch.

He was a pinch-hitter in the designated hitter spot against Chatham, going 0 for 1 with a walk. He has yet to get his first hit in the Cape and has yet to take the mound for the Gatemen. Look for him to be somewhere in the lineup tonight, whether he’s at the plate or on the rubber.

For the Y-D Red Sox, be on the lookout for both Will Baker (Georgia Tech) and Avery Ortiz (Oklahoma State), who are both batting .400 or higher this season. In Monday’s game against Bourne, Ortiz went 2 for 4, scoring a run, and Baker went 1 for 4, picking up his fifth hit in three games. These Red Sox sluggers could cause some trouble for the Gatemen tonight.

The Gatemen host the Y-D Red Sox tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Spillane Field in Wareham. You can watch the game at the field for free, or you can tune into the Gatemen broadcast on Cape League TV with Cory Miller, Josh Richardson, and Rayna Maggelet on the call by clicking HERE.
