WAREHAM, Mass. — By a score of 11-0, the Wareham Gatemen (15-8) fell to the Brewster Whitecaps (10-13) in mercy rule fashion at home on Saturday.

Following a pair of singles off the bats of Dallas Macias (Oregon State) and Kaeden Kent (Texas A&M), Brewster got on the board early in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Cuvet (Miami). Gatemen starting pitcher Cole Leaman (Lehigh) held the Whitecaps to just the one run though, as he secured the final out on a strikeout.

Yohann Dessureault (Stetson) led Wareham’s half with a single to right field before he went on to swipe second with one out. Despite the early single and nifty baserunning, Brewster’s Ryan Ure (Oklahoma State) retired the side on two flyouts and a ground ball to hand the bats back over to his offense.

Both teams went scoreless in the second, but the game took a turn for the worst for the Gatemen in the third inning. With one out, Macias singled to right field and scored on a home run by designated hitter Ryder Helfrick (Arkansas). Like his teammate, Cuvet also knocked one out to make the score 4-0 before the Gatemen managed to stop the bleeding.

Uncharacteristically of the Gatemen, Wareham’s offense and pitching continued to struggle as the game progressed. Brewster broke it open in the fourth inning on a three-run Drew Faurot (Florida State) home run to right-center. They continued to extend their lead in the sixth on a bases-clearing Faurot double. The Whitecaps closed out the scoring in the seventh on a string of singles by Blake Binderup (Texas A&M), Faurot and Macias. Offensively, Wareham only put up four hits compared to Brewster’s 19.

The Gatemen look to bounce back on the road on Sunday versus the Harwich Mariners (9-14). They defeated Harwich, 7-3, on June 26 and 4-0 on July 2.
