Falmouth struggles to put up runs against Bourne's defense in a rainy matchup

FALMOUTH, Mass. — As the rain started to roll in, the Falmouth Commodores' fate was sealed when Marek Houston (Wake Forrest) doubled in the ninth to put the Bourne Braves up 6-1 at Guv Fuller Field on Friday.

Falmouth loaded the bases to be in scoring position and pinch-runner Dylan Carey (Nebraska) came home, but the late-inning rally wasn’t enough. The Commodores dropped the game, 6-2.

“Right now we’re playing good ball,” third baseman Jayson Jones (Arkansas) said. “We made a couple errors in the infield today, but other than that I feel like we’re putting bat on the ball pretty well.”

Commodores starting pitcher Jack Seppings (Brown) and Braves starting pitcher Zane Adams (Alabama) went toe-to-toe in the first inning, recording two strikeouts and forcing a quick three outs from both offenses.

Landyn Vidourek (Cincinnati) put up the first home run of the season for Bourne to punch in four runs to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Falmouth had a deficit to overcome when coming up to bat the second time, but Adams punched in two more strikeouts and got back up from his defense with a popout.

Bowen Baker (Fairfield) relieved Seppings in the top of the third. The Braves' offensive spark stayed alive in the third to record three hits and another run to push their lead to 5-0.

The Commodores struggled to reignite that offensive momentum they’ve tapped into in their past two matchups in the third and fourth innings, but Jones hit a single to put some fire into the Commodores offense in the bottom of the fifth.

“I didn’t get a lot of ABs in my school ball, so coming out here, it’s a tough league to hit in,” Jones said. “I’m grinding every single day, and getting better is the ultimate goal.”

Jones crossed home plate on a single from Tab Tracy (Texas A&M) to put Falmouth on the scoreboard, 5-1.

“That felt great,” Jones said when talking about putting up the first run of the night for Falmouth. “That’s a good team over there. They won the championship a couple years in a row, so yeah, we had to get something going quick."

The Braves had a pitching change to Brayden Risedorph (Indiana) and their defense stayed solid to hold the Commodores from putting up any more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Francis Ferguson (Eastern Nazarene) was the third pitcher to take the mound for Falmouth and it was his third appearance of the summer.

Ferguson punched in his first strikeout on Vidourek in the top of the eighth. The Commodores picked up a walk and a single in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to get into scoring position going into the final inning of the night.

Kade Woods (LSU) also made his Falmouth debut on the mound in the ninth. Woods gave up two walks, a double and a run that allowed Bourne to clinch the win.

“Our guys that are in the pen are coming in and giving all their stuff, so I feel like it’s just going to come around, so nothing much to really change,” Jones said.

Up next, the Commodores (1-5) will travel to Veterans Field to take on the Chatham Anglers (3-3) on Saturday with the first pitch set for 7 p.m.
