All 10 Cape League teams have played 30 regular season games and just 10 remain before the playoffs.
Yarmouth-Dennis remains atop the CCBL East Division at 18-9-3 and is tied with Cotuit for the most points in the league. As ties are allowed in the CCBL, a point system is used to determine the standings with two points awarded for a win and one point for a tie. Here are the standings as of 7/22/2024.
East Division
- Yarmouth-Dennis: 39 Points (18-9-3)
- Chatham: 32 Points (16-14)
- Brewster: 25 Points (12-17-1)
- Orleans: 22 Points (11-19)
- Harwich: 20 Points (10-20)
West Division
- Cotuit: 39 Points (19-10-1)
- Wareham: 37 Points (18-11-1)
- Hyannis: 35 Points (17-12-1)
- Bourne: 28 Points (13-15-2)
- Falmouth: 23 Points (11-18-1)
Y-D holds a commanding seven-point lead in the East Division with a 10-3-1 record against fellow division foes. Chatham is 6-4 in its last 10 games, highlighted by a five-game win streak before three straight losses. The Anglers are 3-10 against teams above .500 this season and are just one of two East Division teams with 30 or more points.
Brewster is 3-6-1 in its last 10 games and has lost three consecutive games with just five combined runs in those contests. Five points separates the Whitecaps from fifth place Harwich.
The Firebirds took down the Mariners 5-4 on Sunday for their fourth win in a row as the former jumped ahead into the fourth and final playoff spot. Five of the next 10 games for Orleans will come against teams above .500 including Wareham, Cotuit, and Y-D and the Firebirds will battle Harwich again on Aug. 2.
The Mariners are 1-9 in their last 10 games but will play half of their next set of games against teams under .500, including a pivotal home-and-home series with Brewster on July. 25 and Aug. 4 which is the final day of the regular season.
It’s a three-horse race at the top of the West Division as just five points separates Cotuit, Wareham and Hyannis, who have taken a stronghold on the top three places in the division.
Cotuit surged in July with All-Stars Brandon Compton (Arizona State), Tanner Thach (UNCW) and Jarren Advincula (Cal) leading the way. The Kettleers are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games with a pair of wins coming against Wareham and Chatham in that stretch. They will play Hyannis twice and Wareham once.
Wareham has slugged its way to the heart of the playoff race with a league-leading .775 OPS. The Gatemen - led by potential MVP candidate Murf Gray - have lost only seven games in July but have lost three of their last four including a 7-2 defeat to Falmouth on Sunday.
Hyannis has six games remaining against teams over .500 including a home-and-home with Wareham and the final regular season game at Y-D. The Harbor Hawks have the best home record on the Cape at 13-2 but are 4-10 on the road and have allowed the second fewest total runs in the league.
Just like the top of the West Division, five points separate fourth place Bourne and fifth place Falmouth. Both teams will play Wareham and Hyannis once and Cotuit twice more. The Braves and Commodores each have six games left against plus .500 opponents and will meet in a crucial matchup on Aug. 1 at Doran Park.
The Braves have been streaky in July as a three-game win streak was met with a three-game skid before the two-time defending champs won three out of four before the 30-game mark. Falmouth is 2-11 on the road but has a 9-7 record at Guv Fuller Field and are 3-1-1 in its last five games.
