Struggling to see in the hazy fog, 0-for-4 in the contest and down to the game's final strike. These were the odds stacked against Dalton Bargo (Tennessee) on Sunday night at McKeon Park.
Nevertheless, the Harbor Hawks utility man prevailed. The left-handed stick got an outside fastball from the CCBL's saves leader, Trevor Moore, and went with it to drive in Nick Groves (Illinois) and Alex Lodise (Florida State) for a 6-5 walk-off win against the Red Sox.
"It feels good, you know, to get a win for the boys," Bargo said. "It was a rough night for me at the plate, but we swung the bats well with nine hits. It was a team effort, I was just fortunate to be in that spot and made the most of it. I came into the at-bat trying to flush everything and squared one up."
In what was a pitchers' duel for most of the contest between Hawks (14-9-1) righty Jason Reitz (Oregon) and the Cape Cod's ERA leader, Braden Osbolt of Yarmouth-Dennis (15-8-1), that turned into a back-and-forth affair in the later innings.
"On each side, both guys pitched really well, you know," head coach Mitch Karraker said. "We were able to spark something later on in the [Sunday's] game. Get a walk, some hits, and [Bargo] came up when we needed him the most. I think he's a competitor, a big-time competitor. He wants to win and it showed there on [Sunday]."
Reitz, standing at 6-foot-9, walked a pair of Y-D hitters in the top of the first but settled in afterward. The lengthy right-hander worked through five innings of a two-hit ball where he shut out a great Red Sox lineup. He struck out four and walked three, retiring 10 of his last 11 hitters, picking off two in the process.
"Yeah, I didn't really have it in the first two innings, but I adjusted," Reitz said. "It's the biggest thing, you know, being able to adjust mid-game, find out what's working and what isn't."
Before signing with the Harbor Hawks, Reitz was a member of the Y-D squad earlier this summer. He only pitched in one game for the Red Sox, chucking three innings. The former Saint Mary's product was extremely familiar with the opposing dugout on Sunday evening.
"Yeah, I mean, those are some of my boys over there," Reitz said. "I love them, but once you get in between the lines, you're not thinking about that. You're competing, so yeah, that was fun, but when I'm pitching it's not something I'm thinking about too much."
Reitz now has an impressive 2.45 ERA this summer with Hyannis, while Osbolt fired four scoreless himself lowering his stout ERA to a dismal 0.44. Because of these two arms, it took time for both clubs to figure things out offensively. Hyannis and Y-D had scratched across two hits apiece when the fifth inning approached.
"[Reitz] has some nasty stuff," Karraker said. "He had a real good feel for the slider [Sunday] which was good. He was able to work through a couple of walks he had early, settled in nicely, and threw the ball really well."
Gavin Gallaher opened the game's scoring on Sunday, the Tar Heels prospect smacked a single down the right field line off Aaron Mishoulam (Michigan State) in the top of the seventh. Y-D plated two runs that inning as the Cape's best team in terms of winning percentage was in the driver's seat yet again.
Hyannis came storming back in the bottom of the seventh with an answer. Kane Kepley (Liberty) came through in the clutch for the Hawks, smoking a double to the center field fence for a three-RBI double. It was clubbed 94 mph. Kepley's knock drove in Cannon Peebles (Tennessee), Josh Tate (Georgia Southern) and Groves.
Once the clubs dipped into their bullpens, the scoring didn't seem to stop. Jackson Chirello and Gallaher each boasted multi-hit performances for the Red Sox on Sunday, while Michael Dattalo (Dallas Baptist) went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Harbor Hawks.
Things looked shaky in the top of the eighth when Y-D put up three more runs on some timely hits, but Bargo's big two-RBI knock made all the difference in the end.
"I think [this win] says a lot," Karraker said. "I think [Y-D] is one of the best teams in the Cape by far. You know, obviously frustrated with the three we gave up in the eighth, but being able to come back and put together quality at-bat after quality at-bat is pretty spectacular. It never seems like were out of it."
After Monday's needed off day, the Harbor Hawks will stay home and host the Brewster Whitecaps on Tuesday at McKeon Park. First pitch is expected at 6 p.m.
