Brewster Whitecaps first baseman Brody Donay and right-handed pitcher Jake Clemente have been named the Cape Cod Baseball League Players of the Week, presented by Del Mar Vacation Rentals, for the week of July 13-19, the league announced Monday.
Donay, a 20-year-old first baseman from the University of Florida, reached base twice in each of the four games he played in last week, slashing .467/.529/.933 and piling up seven hits, including two home runs and a double. Donay drove in three runs for the Whitecaps as well, and earned himself a starting nod in the upcoming Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game.
Among all first basemen, Donay sits second in total home runs with five. His bat has come alive in the last few weeks, rounding out Brewster’s elite lineup.
Clemente, a 20-year-old righty also from the University of Florida, pitched seven strong innings in a 7-0 win over Harwich on July 17. Clemente allowed just one base runner on a single, facing just one batter over the minimum. He struck out six Mariners, and his 1.93 ERA makes him one of only four Cape League qualified pitchers with an ERA under two on the season.
Like Donay, Clemente earned a spot on the All-Star roster on the back of his performance last week; Clemete’s 0.96 WHIP is fifth best in the Cape League.
This week marks the first time in 2024 teammates have won hitter and pitcher of the week, and the first time college teammates have also won the awards in the same week. After the off day, the Whitecaps will go on the road to face the East Division’s first-place Y-D Red Sox, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
