As of July 14th, the two-day, 20-round MLB Draft has officially wrapped up. Once again, the Cape Cod League proved why it's the premier amateur summer league—consistently producing MLB talent and serving as a launchpad for breakout college seasons. The Brewster Whitecaps were no exception.
Brewster made a major impact on this year’s draft, producing three first-round picks—tied for second most among Cape League teams.
Ike Irish was the first ’Cap off the board after batting .283 with a .383 OBP, five extra-base hits, and eight RBIs over 28 games in Brewster. Patrick Forbes, one of two multi-year ’Caps selected, logged 31 innings across two summers, posting a 2.90 ERA with 42 strikeouts. Nolan Schubart came off the board early and made the most of his brief stint in Brewster, racking up five extra-base hits—including three home runs—in just nine games.
Four players were drafted the same year they suited up for Brewster, including Josiah Ragsdale, who hit .373 with a .918 OPS and 15 stolen bases in just 16 games in 2025. Another was Nick Dumesnil, one of the team’s MVPs last summer, who led the entire Cape League in doubles (12) and stolen bases (26) while slashing .311/.377/.489 with four home runs. Jared Jones was selected in the middle rounds of the draft and made a brief stop in Brewster, where he launched two home runs during the summer between his first of two national titles and his breakout season in Baton Rouge.

I asked Head Coach Jamie Shevchik what advice he gives to players after hearing their name called in the draft:
“Now the real hard part starts, right?” Shevchik said. “The easy part is to get drafted. The hard part is to get to the big leagues and stay in the big leagues… Here comes the true test of their character and the resilience of everything that's there now, right in front of them.The most fun part of their lives is over now, and now they're going to be grinding this out until they get to the big leagues, and hopefully they get there soon.”
Shevchik also noted that with so many Keystone alumni already in pro ball, he now gets the added joy of watching his Brewster players reach the big leagues too—and how rewarding that is.
“Anytime you turn on the TV and you watch a major league game and one of your boys is playing there, there's a sense of pride that comes over you. You know, I don't know if I had any part in that kid's life or helped him or not, but it's pretty cool that he was on my team at one point, and now he's in the big leagues.”
