In a double-elimination postseason, Day 2 is when some teams' summers end. Three teams saw their seasons come to a close Wednesday night, while one first-round series was pushed to a decisive winner-take-all Game 3.
Day two started off in Cotuit as the Kettleers made a last stand to keep their season alive. The Kettleers fell short, losing 7-1 after a 7-0 blanking in Game 1, making them the first team eliminated from this year's playoffs. Dawson Santana provided their sole run with a sacrifice fly in the third, but the Hawks jumped all over Cotuit's pitching with five runs in the first four innings. Hyannis kept it clean on the mound as Raymond Olivas continued his strong summer, allowing just one run in 4.1 innings of work. Hyannis' bullpen silenced the Kettleers bats through the remaining innings. Leadoff hitter Matt Ineich walked twice, scored twice and had two RBIs, including a solo home run in the third inning. Jax Giminez drove in three runs from the two-hole as Hyannis cruised into the West Division Finals.
The Bourne Braves silenced all of their doubters with a 10-2 win in Falmouth. In a first round rife with upsets, Bourne’s A1 lineup delivered as it has all summer. The Braves scored eight runs through five innings as Ryker Waite, Justin Osterhouse and Austin Hawke all had multi-hit games. Luke Costello and Justin Osterhouse both launched deep shots out of Guv Fuller Field in the Braves win. Falmouth managed seven hits to Bourne’s 10, but could only post two runs on the board. Brayden Jefferis and AJ Putty both had multi-hit games in a last-ditch effort to keep Falmouth in the fight. In the end Falmouth stranded eight runners on base. Bourne now moves on to the West Division Finals against Hyannis.
Chatham continued their pitching dominance with a playoff no-hitter through five innings from Christian Chatterton, just 24 hours after Cape League Pitcher of the Year Angel Cervantes pitched a gem in their Game 1 victory at Y-D. However, the Anglers fell 1-0 in a pitching duel in front of their home crowd against the President’s Trophy-winning Red Sox. The Anglers managed just two hits compared to three from the Red Sox as they failed to continue their home run power from Game 1. Y-D’s Brock Ketelson continued his two-way magic with 5.2 no-hit innings while batting fifth in the lineup. A Ryder Robinson solo shot in the eighth was all it took for Y-D to even the series. Y-D survived the road trip, and the only Game three of the first round will return to Y-D as the Red Sox will need their home crowd to stop the Anglers from ending their season.
Harwich and Brewster had another nail-biter in a series that has been back-and-forth all summer long. Harwich sent Brewster home with a 6-5 extra-inning win after a tight battle at Whitehouse Field. Brewster’s red-hot lineup and their 13 hits were not enough to surpass Harwich’s six-hit effort as they left 12 runners on base. With two outs in the fourth, Harwich opened the scoring when JP Peltier launched a three-run shot out of the park. In the fifth, Brewster’s Eddie Yamin IV responded instantly with a three-run shot of his own as Brewster claimed the lead up 4-3. Harwich ultimately tied the score and both teams would add one more run to make the score 5-5 heading into extra innings. After Brewster was blanked in the 10th, Harwich’s UMass Lowell product Sean O’Leary continued what he’s done all season long with a walk-off double to end the game and the season for the ‘Caps. The Mariners will advance to take on the winner of the Y-D and Chatham series.
