With the cowbells of the Bourne faithful echoing through Doran Park, the Mariners survived a 1-0 defensive battle to bring the Championship Series back to Harwich for a winner-takes-all Game Three.
After a 7-3 Game One and multiple high-scoring Divisional Finals, Game Two was decided in a pitcher's duel.
Bourne starter Noah Scott threw for six punch outs in six innings, but exited the game after Harwich added the game’s one and only run in the top of the seventh. Niko Brini got the inning started with a perfectly placed bunt up the third baseline for a hit. Ty Smolinski then doubled and sent Brini to third. Cade Kurland brought Brini home on a sacrifice fly to straight away center field.
Harwich’s Bryan Matuschat stole the show. Matuschat had eight relief appearances this summer, but has successfully transitioned into a postseason starter for the Mariners. Inspired by a late Sunday night Rocky viewing, Matuschat didn’t hear the (cow)bell as he threw 6.2 scoreless innings.
The game remained 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning but Bourne was not going to go quietly. After a Luke Costello strikeout, Max Farrell walked. Justin Osterhouse grounded into a fielder’s choice, cutting down Farrell at second base. Osterhouse now represented the tying run on first but with two outs. Austin Hawke stepped up to the plate and poked a ball just over the reach of the second basemen and gave the Braves a first and third situation.
Eliot Medlock took one last warm-up swing before stepping into the batter’s box. Medlock was fresh off his late-game heroics against Hyannis, when his pinch-hit double sent Bourne to the Championship Series. Now, he had a full game to prepare for another big moment.
Harwich closer Thomas Mitchell had one Brave left to eliminate. The Mariners allowed Austin Hawke to advance to second as they focused their attention on Medlock. With the count even at 2-2, Mitchell fired a low breaking ball that Medlock was unable to check his swing and was called out on appeal to the first base umpire, ending the Braves rally.
The Mariners survived Bourne, shutting out the Braves and sending the series back to Harwich for a winner-take-all Game Three.
Game Three in Harwich will be as consequential a game as any. A Bourne win on the road means Landers’ Braves will take home their fourth title in five years, and a Harwich win means the Mariners will successfully replicate the 2024 season that saw the Mariners besting the Braves in the Championship series.
