Saturday was elimination day in the Cape League playoffs as all four teams were locked in for a chance at a League Championship appearance or the end of their season.
In the East, Harwich erased a three-run deficit and survived a ninth-inning scare to defeat the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 7-6 and punch its ticket to the Cape League Championship Series. The Mariners trailed 5-2 in the fifth before league MVP Ty Smolinski’s three-run homer tied the game, and Quinton Coats’ sixth-inning double gave Harwich its first lead of the night. Y-D threatened again in the ninth, but Harwich held on to finish the comeback and end the Red Sox’s season after such a strong summer.
Smolinski led the way for Harwich, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Colin Larson added two hits, two runs and a walk, JP Peltier had three hits and an RBI, and Coats delivered the go-ahead hit off the bench.
Y-D jumped out to an early lead behind a Jayce Tharnish sacrifice fly and a Ryder Robinson RBI double, then extended its advantage to 5-2 on Tommy Goodin’s solo homer in the fifth. Harwich answered immediately, with Smolinski’s three-run blast turning a three-run deficit into a tie game.
By the ninth inning, the Mariners found themselves up 7-5. After a Jake Souders RBI single, Y-D quickly loaded the bases with one out. The home crowd at Whitehouse Field fell silent as Y-D began its rally to keep its record-breaking season alive. Reese Oakley took the mound with the game and Harwich’s season on the line.
Phoenix Call stepped up to the plate, but Oakley struck him out swinging. The Mariners were now one out away from their second Championship appearance in three years..
Reid Howard stepped up with the bases loaded, two outs and Y-D’s season on the line. Oakley once again won the battle, striking out Howard to strand all three runners and send Y-D home. The Mariners completed the comeback and punched their ticket to the Cape League Championship Series.
In the West, the Bourne Braves shut out the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 3-0 Saturday night behind a dominant pitching performance, finishing off the West Division Finals and advancing to the championship series. Bourne held Hyannis to just five hits while striking out 11, with starter Will Harrigan leading the way with six scoreless innings.
Matt Bolton provided the offense, driving in the first of Bourne’s three runs while going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Bourne opened the scoring in the first inning when Bolton singled home Rustan Rigdon. In the bottom of the sixth, Bolton was in the middle of the action again, scoring when Max Farrell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving Bourne a 2-0 lead. Gabriel Milano added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly that scored Luke Costello, giving the Braves a three-run cushion with three innings to go.
Harrigan was nearly untouchable, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six. Aiden Stillman followed with two scoreless innings before Maddox Webb closed out the ninth.
The Hawks loaded the bases with one out as Taylor Kirk stepped to the plate. Kirk was a key contributor all year for Hyannis, but he grounded into a double play to end the game ending a successful season for the Harbor Hawks.
Hyannis never found an answer at the plate, going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven runners on base as Bourne completed the shutout and punched its ticket to the Cape League Championship Series.
Bourne has now advanced to the championship series in each of the last six seasons, winning three. This year’s championship will be a rematch of 2024, when the Mariners defeated the Braves in three games.
