Will Fosberg (Northeastern) launched a three-run home run in the second inning to give the Harbor Hawks a lead they never surrendered in a 6-2 victory over the Falmouth Commodores.
The win snapped Hyannis' four-game losing streak and improved the Harbor Hawks' record to 5-9 on the season.
One day after being shut out on three hits by Orleans, the Harbor Hawks responded with a 10-hit performance in what head coach Mitch Karraker called the team's "most complete game of the season."
"I'm proud of the guys. Scuffling like that can be hard to get past, but tonight we probably played our most complete game of the season," Karraker said. "The pitching was good. The defense was excellent. The offense was working. There's really nothing negative to say about the performance tonight."
Hyannis received four strong innings from starter Carter Cox (Northern Illinois), who gave up one run on four hits and struck out two.
Sax Matson (Southern California) followed with two scoreless frames before Truitt Webb (Southeastern Louisiana) closed the final three innings.
Falmouth jumped out to an early lead in the first inning courtesy of an RBI single from Jimmy Nugent (Louisville), plating Pearson Riebock (Baylor), who had reached earlier in the inning via walk.
The Commodores' 1-0 lead didn’t last long, as Hawks’ Charlie Bates (Stanford) put Hyannis ahead in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI single to right field that scored Jax Giminez (Oregon) and Caden Miller (Texas-San Antonio), giving Hyannis a 2-1 lead just one inning into play.
Bates finished the night 3-4 with three singles. One of three Hawks with multi-hit nights, Matt Ineich (West Virginia) and Will Fosberg (Northeastern) had two hits apiece.
After Cox retired the side in the top of the second, Hyannis put up three runs before recording the first out of the inning. Matt Ineich (West Virginia) led off with a double down the right field line, and Kyle Alivo (Iowa) moved him to third on a groundball single to left.
With two on, Will Fosberg (Northeastern) blasted the 1-1 pitch to right-center, extending the Hawks' lead to 5-1 with his first home run of the season.
After bouncing in and out of the lineup, Fosberg said Monday’s performance gave him a much-needed confidence boost.
"Tonight helps the confidence, no doubt. It's definitely a boost knowing you can compete at this level, so I'm happy I was able to get things going. Now I need to keep it rolling when my name's called," Fosberg said.
Jordan Lodise (Georgia Tech) scored Hyannis' sixth run in the third inning on a 4-3 fielder's choice by Matt Ineich (West Virginia), giving the Harbor Hawks a five-run cushion.
Neither team scored over the middle three innings, but Falmouth threatened to climb back into the game. The Commodores loaded the bases in the fifth and put two runners on with no outs in the sixth, but Hawks reliever Sax Matson (Southern California) escaped both jams to preserve the lead.
Karraker credited Matson for limiting the damage and swinging the momentum back in Hyannis' favor.
"I think he was a little frustrated with himself at the beginning, so what I'm really happy with is he didn't let it affect him for the next guy," Karraker said. "He stopped the bleeding and made the pitches when he really had to. Anytime you can do that in those moments, it grabs the momentum and brings it right into the dugout."
Falmouth added a run in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single from Ben Slanker (Louisville) that brought Jimmy Nugent (Louisville) home, but it was too little, too late, as the Commodores fell to 6-7 on the season.
Hyannis closes out its three-game homestand Tuesday night when it welcomes the Cotuit Kettleers to McKeon Park for the second meeting between the two clubs this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
"I told the guys that was the recipe right there. If we can just do the little things well, we'll at least have a chance to be in the game, if not win it. No need to overcomplicate it," Karraker said.
