Big fifth inning propels Hawks over Commodores in West Division victory

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks defeated the Falmouth Commodores at McKeon Park on Tuesday night, 5-2. This now marks seven games in a row in the last two seasons that the Hawks (21-13-1) have defeated the Commodores (13-20-1) on home turf.

“We’ve just started to have some success at the plate. The guys are feeling a little bit better and are putting some really good swings on the ball,” head coach Mitch Karraker said. “Pitching-wise, we’ve been pretty consistent for the last few weeks. They’ve kept us in games even when we aren’t hitting. When you put those two things together that equals some wins.”

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks recorded the game's first runs. Carson Boles (Arkansas) and Kane Kepley (North Carolina) both singled to left to get a quick first and second baserunner. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, making it second and third with Jaxson West (Florida State) up to the plate. West scored Boles on a soft single to left.

Eddy Pelc (Grand Canyon) walked to load up the bases just one batter later. Snow then came in clutch with a laser to right-center, scoring both Kepley and West and making it safely into second. For the last run of the inning, Mason White (Arizona) hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Pelc and making the score 4-0.

“Getting our confidence back and playing within ourselves, just knowing the talent is there,” Snow said of the team’s recent success. “We’ve worked hard to get to this point and we just try to have fun and let [the game] take care of itself.”

On the bump Tuesday for Hyannis was Aaron Savary (Iowa). Zeros were sprayed across the board until the fifth inning, when the Hawks scored. In his four innings, he allowed three hits, three walks and struck out six. Next to take the mound was Aaron Mishoulam (Michigan State). He allowed four hits and an earned run.

“I just try to do the same thing I’ve been doing, just like mixing well, being able to land everything and just throwing strikes,” Savary said. “It was just a matter of letting them put it in play, let the defense behind me work, and let our hitters work as well.”

In the sixth, Boles singled to center field. Blake Cavill (Western Kentucky) scored Boles on a deep double off the center field fence. Cavill was left a second and Boles was the only one who touched home.

Reed Moring (UC Santa Barbara) took the bump in the top of the seventh. In his 2 1/3 innings, he allowed three hits and one earned run. Moring registered four strikeouts. Dominick Carbone (Coastal Carolina) was put in to relieve Moring for the final two outs of the game. He secured the two outs without letting a Commodore score.

“We’re on a roll… We want to host in the playoffs. So, you know, I think that plays a big, big role in trying to win these games,” Snow said.

The Harbor Hawks allowed the Commodores to score two runs to their five. With Monday night’s victory, Hyannis moved to second place in the West Division. With the victory on Tuesday, it now marks four straight wins.

Hyannis will compete in a rain rematch against the Chatham Anglers on Wednesday night at Veterans Field at 7 p.m.
