BREWSTER, Mass. — Sunlight and heat radiated on Stony Brook Field on Tuesday. The heat index hit triple digits by 3:30 p.m., and jerseys would be no match for the sweltering heat.
Instead, the Kettleers turned to their practice shirts.
Cotuit is now 1-0 in the maroon warmup jerseys.
After a long six-game stretch without a win, Cotuit found itself back in the win column in Brewster.
The Kettleers defeated the top-ranked team in the league, 6-2, Tuesday night, highlighted by a two-hit performance by second-year Kettleer Jarren Advincula (transfer portal).
“It’s the 'next guy up' mentality,” Advincula said. “Obviously, it shows. We finally put up six runs.”
Those runs scored were the most this season. The Kettleers also tied their season high in hits with eight.
Even though Brewster jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, Cotuit quickly took a 2-1 lead in the third, thanks to a wild pitch and a throwing error by Brewster catcher Carson Tinney to score Luke Lavin (Stanford) and Advincula.
Except for a Whitecaps run off a fielding error in the fifth, it was all Ketts. Advincula scored again in the fourth on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Cam Johnson (Oklahoma), expanding the lead to 3-1.
The bats went cold for a couple of innings, but the Kettleers’ pitching staff was throwing heat off the mound.

For starting pitcher James Hays (Stetson), Tuesday's game was exactly what he needed to get back on track.
In his last outing against Harwich, Hays went 1 2/3 innings and gave up six earned runs. This time around, the right-hander shut down the hot Brewster offense, allowing only one earned run over 4 2/3 innings while striking out seven.
“It was really just figuring out a way to have a chip on my shoulder here and slowing the game down, setting the pace and just executing pitch to pitch,” Hays said. “(The outing) was essential.”
Cole Carlon (Arizona State) and Tyler Albanese (San Jose State) finished out the game for the Kettleers, pitching a combined 4 1/3 innings of one-hit, no-run ball.
Although the Ketts found their groove on both sides of the ball, the Whitecaps struggled to prevent errors, passed balls and wild pitches.
Another error on Brewster catcher Tinney plated Moutzouridis in the seventh, putting the Ketts up 4-2.
In the ninth, Anderson French (Virginia Tech) narrowly missed the first long ball of the season, bouncing a double off the center-field wall. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly from Case Sanderson (Nebraska), putting the Ketts up 5-2.

For the final nail in the scoring coffin, Moutzouridis scored on a single from Lavin, giving the Kettleers a 6-2 lead.
Now, Cotuit manager Loren Hibbs isn’t superstitious, but if the Kettleers can win one game in their T-shirts, who says they can’t win more with them?
“If they let us (wear them), we probably will,” Hibbs joked. “I believe in what works.”
The Kettleers will return to Lowell Park at 5 p.m. Wednesday to face the Chatham Anglers.
