Fueled by helping his teammates, Ryan Cooney gets out of offensive slump with big Game 1 against Cotuit

BOURNE, Mass. — In the first round of the playoffs against Hyannis, Ryan Cooney didn't record a single hit — he was 0-for-13 at the plate.

Cooney entered the playoffs with just a .227 batting average but had showed life at the plate toward the end of the regular season, netting a hit in four of the last five games, which featured a pair of multihit performances.

He didn't want to see the cold start against the Harbor Hawks. Nobody ever wants to go 0-for-13 at any point. Yet, it wasn't just about getting himself on track, it was more so for his teammates.

"I think for me, it's really about working for the team," Cooney said. "Obviously, I didn't do too great the first couple games, but just being able to reset and get back for the guys around me has been really helpful."

It's the team-first mentality from Cooney that has been evident this summer with Bourne. He's frequently cheering on his teammates from the dugout, tapping gloves in the infield, and if he doesn't find his way to a base, he tells Braves that are in the on-deck circle or in the hole what he saw from the pitcher.

The ability to be a good locker room guy is something that Cooney prides himself on, having been one of two recipients from Oregon of the Big Ten Sportsmanship award this summer.

During his time with the Braves, Cooney said a goal of his was to "continue developing as a teammate."

He's had his teammates' backs with his support, but in Game 1 of the West Division Finals against Cotuit, he helped out his teammates with more than just a positive voice, breaking his hitless streak with a big day at the plate.

"I think I just had a good approach tonight. I stuck to what was strong," Cooney said. "The analytic guys in the dugout got me right, so I think that helped a lot. It was a good team win. I'm happy about it."

Cooney was quick to credit that he was happy for the team, and rightfully so, as the Braves are now one game away from their fourth straight appearance in the Championship Series.

Yet, he deserved some credit himself, going 3-for-4 with three runs, a walk and an RBI in the offensive barrage from Bourne that resulted in an 11-5 win.

"I'm out there every time, working for my guys behind me," Cooney said. "It's good to go out there and to contribute at the plate as well."

Cooney is coming off of a 2025 season at Oregon where he posted a .335 batting average to go along with 61 hits, 49 RBIs and six home runs. He started in all 57 games that he appeared in.

It was a strong sophomore campaign for the Portland native playing for the in-state school, but he's used his time on the other side of the country to hone in on his craft.

"Being around these guys where I don't get to see this everyday kind of competition at school," Cooney said. "I think it's been really fun to see new faces and face new arms."

Cooney has been a consistent presence since he arrived in the middle of the summer, being thrown on the diamond at third, shortstop and second, but his ability as a player is just as important as his impact as a teammate.

The Braves are one game short of playing for a trophy. He wants this summer to end with some hardware.

"Guys around here really want to win, and for the community," Cooney said. "It's been really good so far, and we're gonna keep going."
