Wareham’s pitching staff broke through its early-season struggles with eight scoreless innings to finish the night against the Harbor Hawks. Now, the offense has a similar task tonight.
The Gatemen haven’t had their breakout moment yet at the plate, but there were positive signs in the home opener. Shortstop Chris Ramirez (Transfer Portal) tied a game-high three hits and now owns a .429 batting average. Tony Lira (Arizona) came in as a pinch hitter and notched his second hit of the season. Wareham had plenty of men on base and runners in scoring position, but it came down to execution. The Gatemen were unable to put the ball in play during crucial at-bats, and early double plays flattened offensive momentum.
Wareham and Chatham both sit at 0-2 on the year and their positional talent, while strong on paper, hasn’t found a rhythm quite yet. They sit in the bottom two spots of the Cape League for hits, runs, and RBIs.There is still plenty of time in the summer一38 games一for bats to wake up.
Starting Pitchers: Pudvar vs. Hastings
Chatham: Oliver Pudvar (UConn) starred in his 14 starts with the Huskies. He notched a 4.30 ERA and threw two complete games on the year. He is no stranger to a heavy workload, reaching the 70-inning mark each of his last two collegiate seasons. Pudvar impressed on a national stage in the MLB Desert Invitational against Arizona, allowing just two runs over eight innings to earn an upset victory. Pudvar and his swing-and-miss arsenal makes his CCBL debut tonight for the A’s.
Wareham: Logan Hastings (Kentucky) looks to impress fans, scouts, and his college coaching staff after recently committing to the Wildcats. He struck out 71 batters in his sophomore season at Maryland and earned a consistent starter role in the back half of the season. But even before the elevated role, Hastings proved he could be an efficient innings-eater out of the bullpen to save arms for the rest of the weekend. More strikeouts and fewer walks in year 2 has elevated Hastings’ opportunities, including a high-leverage start tonight with the Gatemen in search of their first win of the season.
Players To Watch
Anglers: Chatham’s current hits leader, Connor Shouse (Texas Tech), tallied two base knocks in Sunday’s game and now holds a .375 batting average. It's a similar statline to this past spring with the Red Raiders, an All-Big 12 First Team member after 76 hits and 66 RBIs. Shouse can smack the long ball, but simply gets on base by adjusting to the pitcher’s approach.
Gatemen: Wareham’s defense kept its matchup against Hyannis close until the end. Outfielder Dylan Dubovik (Miami) was a big part of that with three inning-ending grabs to strand runners on base. He recorded two hits in the season opener, and his power-speed combo could contribute to sparking the Gatemen’s offense.
The two squads are in similar situations, but have so much to play for as each CCBL team figures out early mistakes. Tonight’s matchup guarantees one team its first win of 2026 but also may offer an offensive breakthrough as reps with wood bats and against Cape League pitching continue to build.
First pitch from Spillane Field is set for 6:00 p.m. Fans can attend the game free of charge or catch the action from home on Cape League TV or Wareham’s official YouTube page.
