The Y-D Red Sox fell to the Wareham Gatemen, 5-3, after the game was called for rain in the bottom of the sixth. While the lead went back and forth, the Gatemen ultimately pulled away with it right before the rain picked up in Friday night’s game.
For Y-D, Michigan’s Dylan Vigue made his debut starting on the mound. He threw four innings and totaled four strikeouts.
The Gatemen got on the board early with a home run from shortstop Antonio Jimenez in the first inning. Seven hitters in their lineup collected one or more hits during the game, with Jimenez and left fielder Colby Turner leading the team in hits.
Y-D responded with a game-tying RBI single in the second from Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy, which sent UCLA’s Cameron Kim home. Kim also had a single the following inning — the inning that gave Y-D its first lead of the game.
In the third, Oklahoma’s Easton Carmichael ripped a double to left field to keep the offensive energy going. Carmichael is currently hitting with a .471 average, one of the highest on the team. An RBI groundout by Anthony Martinez then helped push Aloy across the plate to put Y-D up by one.
Wareham did not stay behind for long, though. In the fifth, hits from Turner, catcher Rylan Galvan and second baseman Bobby Boser allowed the Gatemen to take a two-run lead. Y-D did generate a nice infield double play in the fifth, but it was not enough to seal a win.
Y-D is now 4-2 and ranked second in the Cape Cod Baseball League East Division, just behind the Harwich Mariners. On Saturday, the Red Sox will challenge the Mariners for the No. 1 spot in the East at 5:30 p.m. in Harwich.
