Cape League baseball is right around the corner.
Wareham hosts Brewster and Bourne for a scrimmage at Spillane Field as a tune-up before Cape Cod Baseball League Opening Day on Saturday. The Gatemen get an opportunity to face a West Division foe and the reigning Cape League champions in the Braves while gaining some cross-division experience against Brewster.
While this pair of games doesn’t count in the standings, Wareham can begin building a home-field advantage with the scrimmage. The Gatemen went 8-12 at Spillane Field last season and dropped four home matchups in the month of June.
Brewster
The Whitecaps come into 2026 with high expectations after a 22-win season in 2025. But similar to the Gatemen, they fell in the Divisional Series last August. Brewster returns its hits leader from 2025, Wake Forest junior Dalton Wentz, and Florida junior Brendan Lawson, who was named an All-CCBL First Team member last summer. The Gatemen split their season series with the Whitecaps at two games apiece in 2025, and both squads come into this summer with a strong blend of both returning pieces and newcomers.
Bourne
The Braves are not only the current gold standard in the West Division, but they are also the model program of the entire Cape League. Bourne has made the last five Championship Series with three of those appearances ending with a championship. The Braves won the West Division three of the last five summers. They finished just two points above the Gatemen last season but went on a dominant playoff run that culminated in a 19-2 victory in Game 2 of the Championship Series. Bourne will be another tough out again this summer with nine returners on the roster. While 2025’s season series went the Braves’ way, the Gatemen snagged a home victory with double-digit hits.
Wareham’s roster offers a strong mix of eight returners and a plethora of newcomers ready to make their mark on the CCBL. This scrimmage, most of all, provides the Gatemen’s coaching staff a better gauge of the roster’s fit ahead of their matchup against the Kettleers in just two days’ time.
First pitch at Spillane Field is set for 6 p.m and is open to the public.
