Mariners' offense sputters against Falmouth duo in road loss

While the Harwich Mariners made their second trip of the season to Falmouth, the offense did not. After scoring six runs at Guv Fuller Field in the third game of the year, the Harwich bats were nowhere to be seen in the Mariners' 3-1 loss Friday night.

It is the first time this season the Mariners have lost consecutive games.

“You’re going to have your peaks and your valleys,” Mariners assistant coach Marc Thibeualt said “It’s hard to sustain your top-flight offense against top-flight arms. Guys are still figuring it out.”

Harwich recorded just four hits against the duo of Grayson Saunier and T.J. Coats. The Mariners struck out 12 times on the night.

Pitcher Jake McCoy made his third start of the summer for the Mariners, hoping to toss his third scoreless start.

Sadly, all good things come to an end.

After striking out the opening batter, McCoy’s next two batters tagged him for a single and a double to put Falmouth up early, 1-0.

Nevertheless, McCoy stayed strong and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

In the second, three hitters reached base with two outs for the Commodores to extend their lead to two.

While McCoy wasn’t perfect, he settled down to throw two more scoreless innings to keep his team in the game.

In the top of the third, the Mariners looked primed to cut into the deficit, loading the bases with no outs.

Alas, the bad luck continued for the Mariners. Leadoff batter Bristol Carter struck out, then Niko Brini hit a soft liner to shortstop Adrian Lopez, who was right on top of second base to double up Shintaro Inoue, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Falmouth added an insurance run in the seventh off Kansas State's Adam Arther.

Aiden Robbins returns with a bang

The rally in the second inning could have been worse had it not been for Aiden Robbins. With runners on first and second and two outs, the left fielder gloved a ground ball as Falmouth’s Jake Osterhouse ran through the stop sign from his third base coach. Robbins fired home to beat the runner to end the inning.

While the rest of the offense struggled at the plate, Robbins provided the only Harwich run of the game. The left fielder led off the seventh inning with a 369-foot shot over the left-center fence to get Harwich on the board.

“It’s good to have him back,” Thibeault said. “He’s got a lot of tools. I know he hasn’t played in a little bit. Once he gets his feet going, he should be a mainstay in the lineup.”

Robbins, returning for his second summer with the Mariners, went 2-for-4 in his second game back.

His shot was the second home run the Mariners hit in Falmouth this season. First baseman Kyle Wolff knocked the team’s first home run of the season during the first game between the two teams.

McCoy makes final start

McCoy’s third, and final, start may not have reached the same level as his first two starts, but the lefty still pitched well. He finished with eight strikeouts on the night, bringing his total to 25, most in the Cape.

Even after allowing two runs, his final ERA stands at 1.46.

Moving forward

With the loss, the Mariners dropped to 5-5-1. They are third in the East Division, one point ahead of the Orleans Firebirds.

Harwich returns home Saturday to take on Orleans. The Firebirds won the first meeting between the two teams at Eldridge Park last Saturday, 3-1. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.
