The 2-1 Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox take on the 1-2 Cotuit Kettleers tonight at Lowell Park in Cotuit. This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Sean Youngerman will be starting on the mound tonight for Y-D for his first appearance of the 2024 Cape Cod Baseball League season. The rising junior from Westmont College was one of the strongest pitchers in the Division II ranks in 2024. Securing an 8-1 record, 3.71 ERA, and 69 strikeouts to just 15 walks etched Youngerman on the All-Pac West Third Team list. He was top 3 on his team in ERA, strikeouts, record, innings pitched (70.1), and earned runs (29).
Anthony Eyanson gets the start for Cotuit tonight, also in his first action on the bump of the 2024 CCBL season. Eyanson finished a star-studded sophomore campaign at UC San Diego in 2024, going 6-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 82.0 innings pitched. The ace from the west coast earned All-Big West Second Team honors while being top 10 in the conference in ERA and strikeouts (85). Eyanson was also one of five pitchers in the Big West to pitch a complete game in 2024.
Phoenix Call, the rising sophomore shortstop out of UCLA, has been moving himself up further in the lineup with each contest. Appearing in all three games for YD so far this season, Call has three hits in nine at bats to go along with an RBI and two stolen bases. He also knocked a clutch RBI single on an outside pitch to put YD up 1-0 in the fifth inning of the team’s nail-biting win over Chatham on Sunday night.
YD has been in three low-scoring games to start their season, and the pitching staff has been elite in all three. YD currently leads the CCBL in team ERA (1.29) and walks given up (7), and is tied for second in hits allowed (16) and runs allowed (5).
Devin Taylor has been the catalyst for Cotuit at the plate so far through their season. Appearing in all three contests, Taylor has three hits in eight at bats to go along with a solo home run and two walks. Taylor is also second in the CCBL in OPS (1.250) and slugging (.750).Aside from a mercy-rule loss to the Harwich Mariners on Opening Day, Cotuit followed that up with two low-scoring contests, going 1-1 in those. The Kettleers are one of two teams in the league with more than one home run as a team, and are third in the league in stolen bases with six.
