After a two-day break thanks to inclement weather, the Braves are back in action on Wednesday to take on the Chatham Anglers. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET. The Braves are coming off their first no-hitter since 2019 in Sunday’s win over Falmouth, while the Anglers are hoping to bounce back from a 3-2 loss to Harwich.
Probables
Bourne - LHP Will Whelan (South Carolina): 13.0 IP, 0.69 ERA
Chatham - LHP Oliver Pudvar (UConn): 15.2 IP, 4.02 ERA
Last Time Out - Bourne
In a matchup for the top spot in the CCBL West division, the Bourne pitching staff dominated the Falmouth Commodores for a 4-1 no-hit win. The Commodores offense took a 1-0 lead in the first inning following a fielder’s choice and three walks. From there, Bourne locked down Falmouth’s bats. The Bravos’ bullpen threw 5.1 innings in relief, allowing only one walk and no hits in the contest. On offense, the Braves loaded the bases each of the first three innings and were able to muster four runs throughout the game to secure the win.
Last Time Out - Chatham
Fighting for position in the East division, the Anglers fell on a walk-off walk in the ninth to the Mariners. The two teams traded blows in the middle innings, each scoring two runs. Entering the bottom of the ninth, the teams were still knotted at two. However, Harwich made quick work of Chatham in the frame. The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs, and drew a walk in the next at-bat to force the winning run home.
Previous Matchup
The Braves and Anglers have faced off twice so far this season. Bourne opened the season series with a 5-1 victory, and the two teams tied 2-2 in their most recent matchup on June 23 in a game that was called after eight innings due to rain.
Player to Watch - Bourne
Infielder Blake Schaaf (Wake Forest) is off to a wicked-hot start in July. Through the first four games, he is hitting .438 with 4 RBI and an OPS of 1.151. Schaaf has been a consistent threat in the Bravos’ batting order, appearing in 17 games so far this season and having hits in all but three of them.
Player to Watch - Chatham
When Cooper Neville (DBU) steps up to the plate for the Anglers with runners in scoring position, there’s a good chance they’re coming home. The Chatham infielder has 16 RBI this season, tied for second most in the CCBL, and is hitting .423 with runners in scoring position. Though Neville has struggled against starting pitchers, he has a .372 batting average and 11 of his RBI when facing relievers.
