OMAHA, Neb.— Georgia’s Charlie Condon was awarded the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in a live ceremony on ESPN this past weekend. Condon, a standout for the Bulldogs, became the 46th recipient of the honor, which has celebrated the nation’s top amateur baseball player since its inception in 1978.
Condon’s electric season saw him break records and dominate leaderboards across the country, ultimately setting a BBCOR-era record with 37 home runs. His impressive performance included leading the nation in batting average (.433), slugging percentage (1.009), total bases (233) and OPS (1.565). As a result, Condon not only won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Year title but also made history as the first Golden Spikes Award winner from the University of Georgia.
This exciting accolade adds another notch on Condon’s belt, which includes a summer with the Falmouth Commodores.
“Charlie was a super friendly kid,” said Mike Murray, the Commodores' assistant general manager. “You could tell he was a superstar.”
Condon’s season was marked by consistency and excellence, earning him First Team All-SEC honors at third base and three SEC Player of the Week awards in 2024. His postseason prowess was evident as he led Georgia to a Super Regional appearance, batting .500 with a home run during the NCAA Athens Regional. Beyond his on-field success, Condon also excelled academically, being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
The 2024 Golden Spikes Award finalists included fellow former Commodore Travis Bazzana (Oregon State), as well as Hagen Smith (Arkansas). However, Condon’s top-tier game play and leadership separated him from the competition. He topped the SEC in various metrics during conference play, including a .983 slugging percentage and 1.517 OPS, while tying for the lead in RBI and walks. Condon’s achievement emphasizes the endless talent in the SEC, with 11 winners hailing from the conference, more than any other in college baseball.
As Condon stays in the spotlight as the nation’s premier amateur baseball player, his journey from Guv Fuller Field to the national stage is a testament to the impact that dedication, talent and sportsmanship can have on and off the field.
