Falmouth squeaks by Bourne to pick up back-to-back home wins

FALMOUTH, Mass. – The Falmouth Commodores fell to the Bourne Braves, 6-2, on June 21, but on Thursday they got their revenge, claiming a 4-2 victory.

“We’ve got to back-to-back wins, so we’re trying to live off that and continue on,” Dylan Carey (Nebraska) said.

For the third game in a row, Falmouth struck first taking an early lead of 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Luke Gaffney (Clemson) hit a sac fly, sending Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma) home and Gavin Kilen (transfer portal) was able to take home when Bourne catcher Matthew Graveline (transfer portal) lost sight of the ball and scattered.

Commodores starting pitcher Tate McKee (Georgia Tech) and his defense had a clean first inning, but in the second inning, McKee gave up two walks, one on a pitch clock violation, to give the Braves loaded bases.

Three walks loaded the bases again for Bourne in the top of the third. Edward Hart (Duke) relieved McKee during the top of the inning, giving up one of those walks. Backup from the infield again got Falmouth out of another sticky situation.

The Braves’ defense stinted the Commodores' offensive burst in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the third, it was a quick three outs for Falmouth picking up two flyouts and a strikeout.

Bourne put up its first run of the night in the top of the fourth with a sac fly from Chris Stanfield (LSU) to send Graveline running home to make it 2-1.

The Commodores got out of their offensive slump in the bottom of the fifth, being led off by Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) picking up his first hit of the summer. The bases became loaded after back-to-back walks from Gaffney and Trent Caraway (Oregon State).

Runners were left stranded when Jayson Jones (Oklahoma State) couldn’t win the race to first base. The Braves took advantage and tied it 2-2 in the top of the sixth.

Falmouth reclaimed their lead with a single from Carey, who was 4-4 on the night, clocking in two RBI to push it 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

“There’s no pressure here; it’s a long summer,” Carey said. “If I get out, I get out. If I get a hit, I get a hit. My teammates, they got my back no matter what, so having that kind of trust made it a lot easier to go up there and put the ball in play.”

The game rounded out with a 1-2-3 inning from Commodores closing pitcher Parker Coil (Arkansas) to give Falmouth their second win in a row.

“We’re going to make it a win streak tomorrow and the 'Dores are going to keep rolling,” Karson Bowen (TCU) said.

Up next, the Commodores (3-8) will take on the Harwich Mariners (6-5) at Whitehouse Field on Friday with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
