Falmouth picks up its first win of the season against Brewster

FALMOUTH, Mass. – The Falmouth Commodores claimed their first win of the season topping the Brewster Whitecaps 13-5 last night.

“It was sticking to our game plan,” designated hitter Luke Gaffney (Purdue) said. “We’ve been in those close situations, we just needed to execute the past few days, and today we hit some balls.”

Brewster came out hot in the first picking up two runs and a single to take an early lead of 2-0. Falmouth wasn’t able to match Brewster’s hot start at bat. Christian Martin (Virginia Tech) and Blake Cavill (Western Kentucky) struck out, and Dylan Carey (Nebraska) had a flyout.

Commodore starting pitcher Tanner Smith (Harvard) redeemed himself in the top of the second with backup from his defense. Chase Mora (Texas State) walked after being hit by the pitch, but Gio Cueto (Stetson) grounded into a double play made by third baseman Jayson Jones (Arkansas), Martin and Cavill to get Mora and Cueto out.

The bottom of the second inning was all Falmouth. The Commodores recorded one double, six singles and picked up two walks to push them to a 7-2 lead by the end of the second.

The momentum all began with Gaffney opening up with a single and Henry Cooke (Virginia Tech) following with a walk after getting hit by the pitch.

The Commodores punched in their first run of the night with a double from Jones, then took their first lead of the summer, 3-2, with a single from Chase Spencer (Air Force). The momentum of the Falmouth offense didn’t end there.

The Whitecaps needed to adjust, so there was a pitching change from Rocco Reid (Clemson) to Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State). Davis recorded two strikeouts to send Falmouth back to the dugout.

Going into the top of the third the Commodores had a pitching change from Smith to Gage Wood (Arkansas). Wood moved the game along with a quick three strikeouts to send Falmouth back to bat.

Martin hit a double in the bottom of the third to put him and Tracy in scoring position. Carey’s sac fly allowed Tracy to come home to push the Commodores to 8-2.

In the top of the fourth, the Whitecaps were able to put up two more runs to close in on their deficit to make it 8-4. After Wood gave up two walks to assist Brewster in scoring, Russell Derbyshire (Jacksonville State) replaced Wood on the mound.

Derbyshire recorded one strikeout to finish the job for the Commodore defense to send Falmouth back to bat. In the bottom of the fourth, Gaffney became 3-3 on hitting and recorded his third single of the night, but it wasn’t enough to get a guy back home.

Santhosh Gottam (Brown) checked in at the mound in the top of the fifth. Gottam recorded five strikeouts on the night.

“It's always a good feeling to strike someone out,” Gottam said. “I was trying to fill up the zone and see what happens.”

The game’s momentum slowed down since the second inning burst, but Gaffney remained hot at bat. He became 4-4 on hitting in the bottom of the sixth and helped LaSalle cross home plate to keep Falmouth on top at 9-4.

The Whitecaps had one run left in them in the top of the seventh with a single from Daniel Cuvet (Miami) to push them 9-5 against Falmouth. Ultimately, the Commodore’s offense was too hot to stop and put up four more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Falmouth’s fate was sealed when Joey Brenczewski (Indiana) hit a single to punch in the final two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 13-5 victory.

Today the Commodores have their first off day of the season, but will return to play action tomorrow night at Yarmouth-Dennis with the first pitch set for 5 p.m. ET.
