Falmouth earns first road win at Wareham

WAREHAM, Mass. Bats stayed hot for the Falmouth Commodores as the team secured its first road win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Wareham Gatemen at Spillane Field on Thursday.

Falmouth took an early lead, with Luke Gaffney's (Clemson) homer to left field in the first inning bringing himself and Dylan Carey (Nebraska) home, putting the Commodores up 2-0. In the second inning, Falmouth wasn’t as hot offensively as Gavin Turley (Oregon State) struck out and Scott Mudler's (Oklahoma) at-bat ended its half of the inning. However, Falmouth's defense executed a double play followed by a strikeout to retire Wareham's batters.

In the third inning, Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) kick-started Falmouth's offense with a single and two stolen bases, scoring on Gavin Kilen's (Tennessee) single to tie the game. The Commodores' defense then shut down Wareham with a pop fly, a catch by Zion Rose (Louisville) and a final out by Gaffney.

The fourth inning saw Falmouth's Trent Caraway (Oregon State) single and Gaffney double, setting up Turley's single to bring Caraway home and give the Commodores the lead. In the bottom half, Wareham’s Sam White (West Virginia) singled on a ground ball, advancing Triston Gray (Fresno State) to second, but the inning ended with Antonio Jimenez's (Central Florida) popout to catcher Mudler.

Yoel Tejeda Jr. (Florida State) was replaced by Tony Pluta (Arizona) for Wareham in the fifth inning. Wareham capitalized on a fielding error by Carey, advancing Gio Cueto (Stetson) to third and Bobby Boser (South Florida) to second.

In the sixth, Carey's double and Gaffney's single set the stage for Turley's single, scoring Carey. With the bases loaded, Mudler walked, but Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma) struck out swinging to end the inning. Falmouth's defense managed a three-up, three-down inning.

In the seventh inning, Carey struck out swinging, and Rose was caught stealing second, resulting in three quick outs. Edward Hart (Duke) relieved Gage Wood (Arkansas) for Falmouth. The Commodores loaded the bases in the eighth, but Mudler grounded into a force out, and Willits grounded out to pitcher Patrick Galle (Mississippi), ending their offensive push.

Wareham's Yohann Dessureault (Stetson) homered in the bottom of the ninth, bringing in pinch hitter Jacob Jarrell (Clemson) and narrowing the gap. Jarrell's double added tension, but Falmouth's defense held steady. A line drive picked up by Kilen secured the final out, clinching Falmouth's 5-3 win.

The Commodores (8-14) look to build on this victory as they return home to Guv Fuller Field to rematch the Gatemen (14-7), with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
