Bourne ends regular season with 2-1 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis

BOURNE, Mass. — Bourne entered its final game of the regular season with not a whole lot to play for.

Following a Wareham loss to Falmouth on Saturday, paired with a Braves win against Cotuit that same day, Bourne clinched the No. 1 seed in the West Division for the playoffs and home-field advantage for divisional play.

Their opponent on Sunday was Yarmouth-Dennis, who also didn’t have anything to play for, as it locked up the No. 4 seed in the East Division. In a game that didn’t have either side playing for much other than momentum heading into the off-day before the postseason, the Braves won, 2-1.

Both sides had runners in scoring position in the first inning, but no runs were added until Bourne went up to hit in the second.

In his first at-bat as a Brave, Luke Costello (Wake Forest) roped a double to get the momentum going. He advanced to third on a passed ball given up by Connor Capece (Creighton) behind the plate.

An RBI single off the bat of Ryan Cooney (Oregon) scored Costello, giving Bourne a 1-0 lead.

Four innings went by with no runs allowed, with Y-D starter Joshua Landry (Hope International) not giving up another run in his four innings. Quinn Holt (Utah Valley) threw a scoreless three innings for Bourne, which was followed up by Colton Hartman (Louisville) not giving up a run in his two frames.

Then the Braves got back on the board, with Kade Lewis (Wake Forest) reaching on a double. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly hit by Cal Sefcik (Cincinnati), where he touched home plate shortly after on an RBI single by Gavin Kelly (West Virginia), who pinch-hit for Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt), to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Y-D had a runner in scoring position in the eighth, as Jayce Tharnish (St. Bonaventure) singled and took second on a throwing error by Cooney. He then advanced to third on a groundout hit in play by Armando Briseno (Long Beach State).

The Red Sox then cut the deficit to 2-1, as Tharnish cashed in on an RBI groundout from Chris Hacopian (Texas A&M).

Landon White (Bryant) came in with one out in the ninth. Jordan Crossland (Maryland) reached second after a walk and a stolen base, but Bourne left Doran Park for the final time in the regular season with a 2-1 victory after White left Crossland stranded with a game-ending strikeout handed to Jack Bell (TCU).
