The first night of the Cape League Playoffs started with a bang. Upsets quickly became the night's headline as the league's two best regular-season teams dropped Game 1 as the higher seeds at home. With no room for error, every pitch carried added weight as teams fought to avoid an early exit. In the double-elimination format, four teams now sit just one loss away from the end of their summer, while four others moved one step closer to a Cape League championship.
The postseason kicked off with the Chatham Anglers stunning the hosting Y-D Red Sox in a 9-5 slugfest. The No. 4 seed Anglers combined for 14 hits, including home runs from Armani Guzman, Harlin Hovater and Tyler Howe. Angel Cervantes had another quality start to silence the red-hot Sox with 5.2 innings of two-run baseball. Y-D Shortstop Reid Howard had another deep shot for the Sox, but their lineup only scored their final three runs in a short-lived desperate ninth-inning rally. Y-D burned through five arms in Game One as they continue to look for their pitching dominance from the President’s Trophy-winning season.
Harwich continued the upsets with a 4-0 defensive battle over a home Brewster squad. Harwich starter Jason Flores and relief arm TJ Ziermann combined for nine scoreless innings as the Whitecaps managed just three hits all game. The Mariners blew the game open with a three-run seventh inning from two straight bunts, something Steve Englert’s squad has stuck with all year. Brewster had no answer for the small ball as they left seven runners on base throughout the game. Jamie Shevchik will need an away win to keep his ‘Caps in the hunt.
The West was far more predictable as Bourne got back on track with an 8-2 victory over Falmouth. Bourne’s experience showed as leadoff hitter Ryker Waite crossed home three times. The Braves swiped three bags as they dominated the basepaths all night. Fabio Peralta and Mathew Farner each posted a pair of hits but the ‘Dores couldn’t capitalize on their short-lived spurts of offense. Falmouth managed eight hits to Bourne’s nine but couldn’t bring them home as efficiently as the Braves. The Braves are just one win away from getting back to the West semi-finals for their fifth straight summer.
Cotuit had a harsh start to Rob Cooper’s playoff debut in Hyannis as the Kettleers were shut out in a 7-0 defeat. Mitch Karraker’s Hawks jumped on Cotuit’s starter Ryan Buckler, posting five runs in five innings. Tyler Lang drove in two runs with two hits for Hyannis. The Hawks stayed consistent with 10 hits dispersed through eight of their hitters that kept constant pressure on Cotuit’s defense. Jonah Barkoff, Brayden Sharp, Bruce Littleton, and Tom Mahoney combined for the shutout and gave up just three hits all night. Cotuit snuck into the playoffs and will need a home win to keep their season alive.
