The Cotuit Kettleers waited nearly three weeks and fifteen games to take on the Falmouth Commodores during the 2026 season. When they got their chance originally on July 4, it did not go well. But after consecutive losses to Falmouth and two rainy off-days, Cotuit looked to avenge themselves when they returned to action Wednesday. Backed by a great pitching outing from Jonathan Adelmann (Bucknell) and a string of key hits, the Kettleers got the job done in a 8-2 win.
The difference in starting pitcher statlines details all one needs to know about this game. Adelmann had a great rebound from his last outing against Falmouth. While he lasted just 0.1 innings and allowed five runs at Guv Fuller Field, the six-foot-seven righty went four scoreless while fanning six batters today. In contrast, Adam Urban (Minnesota) gave up four runs during his 3.2 inning appearance, walking four and giving up three hits. Cotuit started off the game hot, building a 4-0 lead by the halfway point and not letting the Commodores get back into it.
“I felt great about my outing, especially coming off the back of a poor outing against the same team last time,” Adelmann said. “It always feels good to command the zone and get your stuff to generate swings and misses.”
On the other side of the plate, Isaac Sturgess (Wake Forest) had the biggest hit of the day for Cotuit. After lining out in his first at-bat due to an incredible snag from Urban, Sturgess got his revenge when he two-hopped the right field wall with two men on, scoring both and extending the lead to 3-0. Sturgess also had an RBI single to right field in the eighth, capping off his incredible day.
Noah Coy (Notre Dame) was another hero at the plate for Cotuit, notching two RBIs on a pair of clutch singles that helped extend the lead. The first took place during the fourth inning, when he slapped a ball along the right field line to drive in Sturgess. The other was during the sixth inning, when he took a curveball opposite field to score Jayce Lee (Notre Dame), making the game 5-0. Both of these at-bats were long battles with Commodore pitchers, but Coy’s patience helped him win each time.
“Grinding through the long at-bats and succeeding was such a relief,” Coy said. “I knew that by trusting the process and simplifying the game good things would happen for me.”
Falmouth attempted to launch a comeback in the eighth inning, roughing up new Kettleer Dylan Wood (Transfer Portal) for two runs. After two walks from Wood, the first run came on a Carter White (Central Florida) sacrifice fly. Right after, an A.J. Putty (Illinois) single up the middle pushed the second run across. It was actually the Commodores who won the hit battle Wednesday, collecting nine while the Kettleers got eight. But, aside from White and Putty, Falmouth was largely quiet with runners on.
Regardless, a series of three hits and two walks in the bottom half of the eighth put the game completely out of reach for Cotuit. The Kettleers also did a good job taking advantage of passed balls from J.J. Kennett (Baylor) in this frame, advancing twice in the eighth alone.
Having snapped their six-game losing streak, the Kettleers can turn a new page as they approach the halfway point of the season. With just one team in the West division sitting above the .500 mark, Cotuit is very much alive for both playoff and division title contention.
“Today was the day that we played a complete game as a team,” Coach Rob Cooper said. “We have a group of guys playing with a good mindset and approach and we’re starting to see it pay off.”
The second half of the season kicks off tomorrow when Cotuit hosts Harwich in a make-up of the game scheduled originally for July 7. The projected starter for the Kettleers is Adam McKelvey (Georgia Tech), and first pitch at Lowell Park is slated for five p.m. EDT.
