With six games remaining, Cotuit was in free fall. Having lost six of their last seven games, the Kettleers desperately needed a victory to avoid falling out of a playoff spot. But when Hyannis came to Lowell Park Tuesday, they played as if the stakes of the game were too much to handle. In a 5-2 loss, Cotuit was simply outmatched in every facet of the game.
The lone bright spots of the game were big hits from J.J. Moran (Stanford) and Truitt Manuel (NC State). Moran left no-doubt when he punished a ball over the left field fence in the second inning for a home run, which was his first of the season. Later on, Manuel threw three innings of one-hit ball to try and keep the Kettleers alive.
Besides that, the game was bleak. At the plate, Cotuit recorded just five hits and only had two extra-base knocks. With runners in scoring position, the team was 0-7 and stranded eight runners throughout the game. When the lights got bright, the Kettleers shied away.
Staying on the offensive side, Cotuit and Hyannis were playing a completely different game on the base paths. The Harbor Hawks stole five bases, reaching on every attempt. Meanwhile, Cotuit did not attempt to steal a base once, which contributed to their inability to generate runs and big innings.
On the mound, the discrepancy between the home and away side was just as great. Hyannis’ pitchers had no problem fanning Cotuit batters. As a unit they struck out 11 Kettleers, and only allowed consecutive batters to reach base one time.
“I like to say the enemy gets a vote, and today their guy had his stuff…” Coach Rob Cooper said. “We just really struggled to put hits together today.”
Meanwhile, the Kettleer arms struggled to put up scoreless innings. After opening the game with two solid innings, starting pitcher Adam McKelvey (Georgia Tech) lost his composure. Matt Ineich (West Virginia) started the frame with a single before swiping second base. With a runner in scoring position, Clay Thompson (James Madison) singled up the middle to bring Ineich home. From there, a Tyler Lang (USC Upstate) double drove in two runs and made it 3-1 Hyannis.
From there the Harbor Hawk offense kept working. Two free passes and a single conceded by Luke Smyers (Alabama) loaded the bases and allowed the away side to pick up their fourth run when Jax Gimenez (Oregon) grounded into a double play. Two innings later, a single from JC Davis (Rice) and a walk conceded by Smyers put Gimenez in a spot to deposit an RBI single into left field, extending the lead to four.
Even on the field it was clear that Hyannis was playing better baseball. The Harbor Hawks played clean baseball, not committing an error all game. On the contrary, Cotuit committed two errors.
This loss seals a defeat in the Barnstable Cup, with Hyannis winning three of the four matchups so far in 2026.
With the margin for error still razor thin in an incredibly close playoff race with Wareham, Cotuit yet again opened the door for the Gatemen to kick the Kettleers out of a postseason berth. In a league fit for future Major League Baseball players, Cotuit has looked far from the part so far in a crucial final stretch. There is time for improvement, but it is running out fast.
“There’s still some baseball to play,” Cooper said. “Until this team is mathematically eliminated we’re just going to keep playing our hardest.”
Fortunately, the Kettleers will have a big chance to separate themselves from Wareham when they head up the road to Spillane Field Wednesday. First pitch is slated for three p.m. EST, and the projected starting pitcher is Ryan Buckler (Transfer Portal).
